Starlight Frozen Custard Closed

by Sanjay S » Mon Nov 23, 2009 2:53 pm

Did we already know Starlight Frozen Custard is closed? I noticed the lights were off Friday night and stopped by yesterday. They still had a banner advertising their summer specials and there are hand-written closed signs in the windows and on the drive-thru and it looks like most of their stuff is gone. It looks like the property has already been listed with a real estate agency - there was a sign out front, but it didn't say if it was for sale or lease.

I was looking forward to trying their root beer, but never had a chance to try them out. :(

Anyone know another place where I can get a good craft root beer?

I know, but it was inevitable.

Go just down the road to BBC, (Bluegrass Brewing Co.) they have growlers of Root beer for Purchase!

No one should be surprised at this one. Question is...how did they make it this long?

My only experience was a rather average product at a premium price.

from the broken driveup speaker, to the "cash only", Im suprised it lasted as long as it did.

It's all what you're used to . . . I grew up in Cleveland, and Starlight had REAL frozen custard (with the 4% egg yolk required under current labeling laws). The problem is that in Louisville other "custard" places were grandfathered in, didn't have the eggy taste, and locals here thought the product average at best.

Oh, well . . . it'll be a long drive now for me to get my custard ;-(

You guys are nuts, i thought Starlight was great. Although I'll admit i've never had any other frozen custard to compare it against.

I did wonder how they made it so long though, especially in the winter.

I liked Starlight as well. I've wondered, though, ever since they (and their more quickly departed sibling, Twister) opened why they built such large buildings. I would have thought a much more compact operation, like the Dairy Kastle on Eastern, might have served them better.

I never went. Did they have seats inside too? For the winter season?

I thoroughly enjoyed their caramel sundae with pecans. Yum.

I'll chime in and say I thought the custard was pretty darn good. Sad to see them close.

We went and thought it was fine, not outstanding, but the portions were just too large. And I always - always wondered about the building and location. That's a prime piece of real estate. And they didn't even appear to fill the building with the operation, so I had to truly wonder how they were paying a mortgage.

I think it could of made it if they served more than ice cream. Some standard drive-in food would have been nice; a good burger, onion rings, and a shake.

Inside seating would have helped during the winter or colder times to bring in some customers too.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but didn't they typically take a hiatus during the colder months?

I'm pretty sure they stayed open even in the winter. I remember making my husband go when I was pregnant.
