Kim:
I went back and reread my earlier post and realized that I said "remember it's mostly about recipe development", what I meant by that is that the "online" or "send us your favorite recipe" type contest is like that. Just to get to the finals - where there are physical cookoffs - you have to be quite astute at correctly writing a recipe. That way, the judges doing the prequalifications - who are only reading recipes - will think yours sounds soooo good, it has to be tried. Next, the recipes are made in test kitchens. If it doesn't work for someone who has never made it before, you're out! Finally, the finalists get to cook at the last "showdown"!
It can be worth the effort though, Pillsbury Bake Off has a $1,000,000 first prize!
On a much smaller scale, but just as fun is the Ky State Fair. I have "friends" I only see once a year at the fair - where we compete against each other in the special contests! It's great fun!
