Heading to Savannah next week for my birthday.....

by Ryane Norris » Mon Aug 10, 2009 8:25 pm

I want to go out to a nice birthday dinner. Any recommendations??? I love seafood and since I'm rarely on the coast that's what I'll want more than likely. Any ideas for things to do around the area would be appreciated too! Thanks!

It's been several years since I've been to Savannah, but I can give you one seafood place to avoid.... Pirate House. It came to us recommended, but it is pure tourist trap. Avoid this one at all costs if you are looking for a special birthday dinner.

Several years ago we lucked into River House Seafood. As the name implies, it's down on the riverfront. My niece's brother-in-law had his wedding reception there this past spring and they loved it. They feature low-country cuisine. Atmosphere was great, service terrific.

I'll second River House Seafood! Every time we go to Hilton Head we always end up in Savannah for a day and quite often eat there. Avoid Paula Dean's restaurant and the seafood place run by her cousin Bubba, their food is mediocre at best and the prices are very high. In addition they're always mobbed because everyone wants to say the ate there! There actually many other wonderful restaurants in Savannah also would this is the only one I can really remember that was outstanding.

Elizabeth on 37th and Olde Pink House are 2 that stick out in my mind.

My dad spends a good part of the year in Savannah, so we get down often and I have become quite familar with the dining scene. I can't speak specifically to River House Seafood, but its generally a good idea to avoid EVERYTHING on River Street - they're all tourist traps for the most part.

Perry's suggestions are very good, but my absolute favorite restaurant is aVida Restaurant and Wine Bar (http://www.avidarestaurant.com/). We've been multiple times, and it's always just amazing. It's a very cool, modern space as well.

A close second for me is 45 Bistro at the Marshall House (http://www.marshallhouse.com/menu.shtml). Great food and a very cool space sort of in an art gallery.

For drinks/entertainment, drop by the Six Pence Pub on Bull Street, or drop into Jazz'd Tapas Bar (http://www.jazzdsavannah.com/) (also good tapas) for some great jazz and well made cocktails.

Finally, please drop by Mable Francis Potter's Cupcake Emporium at State and Bull for a cupcake - my stepmom owns/runs the place, and all the cupcakes are made from scratch and quite addictive. Here's a little writeup: http://www.thesouthmag.com/readarticle. ... &deptid=12

I haven't eaten there, but I think I will when we go to Savannah this fall.

I thought about 45 Bistro, but haven't eaten there either.

No problem, Perry. I do love Savannah - such a great place. We haven't been there in a little over a year, so I'm definitely missing it. I hope to get there this year around the holidays or soon after.

I know it is "touristy" now, but Paul Deen's restaurant is good. It's down home Southern food.

I'm sorry, but I just cannot agree. How recently have you been? Just about any day of the week, you have to stand outside in line for an hour just to get into Lady and Sons (and this is not pleasant in the Savannah summers). People will literally line up at 9:30 or 10:00AM for lunch. I think the food is okay, but WAY overpriced for what it is. I'm absolutely not a fan, and it really has nothing to do with the touristy aspect (though that is rather annoying). For lunch your options are either a $14.00 buffet (not bad priced if you like buffets, I suppose), or entrees and sandwiches that are all $10+, many into the $14 and $15 range, and these are for things like chicken pot pie or a meatloaf sandwich. For dinner, everything is $20+ for, again, things like chicken pot pie. It's just not worth it, considering the kind of meals you can get at the places where locals eat.

I also tried her brother's place, mentioned above, Bubba's Fish something or other, and really wasn't happy about that either. My step-mother and step-brother had ill stomachs afterwards, to boot.

I have total respect for Ms. Deen and her commitment to Savannah, and actually can enjoy her show at times, but to me her restaurant is a joke.

We just got back from vacation on Tybee Island (off the coast of Savannah) and we went into Savannah one night. We went to the Moon River Brewing Co. http://www.moonriverbrewing.com/ and it was awesome! I loved the Goat Cheese and Leeks app!! It wasn't fancy or expensive, but all of the dishes were awesome!

If you want to drive to Tybee, we had a blast at The Crab Shack http://www.thecrabshack.com/ (good food, too!!). Great atmosphere!

And check out the Savannah Candy Company in the City Market area. Yummy and so much fun!!

Have a great time!! I can't wait to go back!

Well...we got back from Savannah yesterday!!! We had such a great time! Without even meaning to we followed Jessica's recommendations exactly.
My cousin treated us to dinner at The Crab Shack for my birthday. Thanks to this place I am a fan of crab legs once again (stopped eating them when I was 14 after a bad experience).

We also hit up the Moon River Brewing Co. My cousins had never been there so we decided to stop in while walking around downtown. We were all so glad we did. The beer was tasty, the food was delicious with very generous portions and the wait staff was extremely friendly! We all loved this place and it's a new favorite for my cousins who live there.

The Savannah Candy Company pralines were some of the best I've ever had and they had my favorite candy turned gum, Razzles, in more flavors than i knew they made!

We also stopped by Shannon Winery and enjoyed a wine tasting. I brought back a bottle of white and red. Can't wait to crack those open!!!

Oh! I can't forget to mention the Boiled Green Peanuts! My cousin stopped by a roadside stand to pick some up. I'd never had them before. What an interesting surprise they were! Soft, wet, and salty...I barely remembered I was eating a peanut. We brought some raw green peanuts back with us and I'm going to attempt them this weekend.

Overall, we loved Savannah and Tybee Island. Can't wait to go back!

That is awesome!! Glad you had a good time...and it is funny that we hit up the same places. I wish we could have spent a week dining out for lunch and dinner...there were so many places that looked good.

Those are a Southern stable! My mom is from South Carolina. We actually either go get a case or have a case brought up to us by relatives, then boil them and actually freeze them for the rest of the year. Yep, I said boil and freeze. It's not as good as fresh, but it sure does hit the craving in the middle of winter.

As far as Deen's restaurant, it's been a good 10 years since I have been.

Then I understand. 10 years ago it was a different place. The crowds have gone up, as well as the prices, since.
