Captain Pepper Jacks

My daughter sent me this text last night.
Located across from Bowman Field on Taylorsville Road - I am assuming. They went 'up the street':-)


Grand opening this friday.
Limited menu until then.
Cheap prices.
Nice people.
Customer service big.

THAT's the name! My friends and I went there after the Derby, they had a buffet with many items that will be on the menu. I can't remember everything they had but I had hummus, babaganoush, red beans and rice, lamb chops, roasted veggies, pork ribs(small, must've been tips?,) lemon chicken, chicken wings, roasted veggies, rice w/nuts and shrimp cocktail. All you can eat for like $11 I think. The standouts were the chicken wings and the red beans and rice, both some of the best the three of us have ever had(my one friend went so far as to say he was going to see if they'd cater his wedding.) Everything else was very good except the rice with nuts was a little dry. They showed me what would be their menu and it looked intriguing, eclectic is probably the best description.

Anyways the wings were so good I'm going back this weekend for them and to try an actual dish as opposed to the buffet. Regardless of how my meal is I will be getting the wings on a regular basis, very flavorful mix of spices and just the right amount of heat. It's seriously worth the trip no matter where you live in the area just for the wings.

The staff all looked to be college aged, except for the chef, and they were all really friendly and made it a fun meal for us. Also they had a decent size beer and wine list, nothing extraordinary but enough microbrews to keep me interested.

Where exactly on Taylorsville? I hope it's not in the former Mazzoni's, which became Queen of Sheba, if I'm not mistaken. We loved Queen of Sheba when it was on Bardstown, but hadn't made it out to the new location.
Anyway, the food you described, Adam, definitely sounds intriguing!

We drove by there this week and Queen of Sheba appeared to be open, so I think we're safe. :) (I've eaten there a couple of times since it moved and reviewed it once ... in my opinion it's just as good as ever.)

It is in the building that used to be a beauty supply warehouse that is between Queen of Sheba and the import car repair place. They have been trying to open for some time, but I believe they had some renovation issues.

Shew! Thanks, Robin! We need to get over there again, but there are so many places that we 'need to get to'!!! Where to next??? Still need to try Red Pepper, and want to head back to DakShin sooooon.

That's funny you mentioned DakShin, Kim. We ate there Sunday night and were pretty impressed. But yeah, Captain Pepper Jack's is right next to Queen of Sheba. From what I understand the delay in their opening was due to the grill's ventilation system not being up to code, or at least that's what I heard from a friend who lives nearby.

I agree with Robin- my hubby and I had lunch at Queen of Sheba today. It was excellent - and today is Selam's (owner/chef) birthday!

Went back to Pepper Jack's this afternoon for lunch, the lamb gyro was really good. Mom got the chicken and dumplings and loved it. They still haven't gotten all of the food they ordered so even though they're officially open they don;t have a full menu yet. I know I'll be going back soon to try something else, good food, good prices and friendly service

I ate there Tuesday. Actually, I ordered there and ate at a friend's house as the service was so bad we just wanted to get out of there. I normally don't slam a new restaurant, as it can take time to master the operations, but Captain PepperJack's service was abysmal.

To not "normally" slam a new restaurant you sure went to a lot of trouble to sign up on this forum today and post a link to your totally negative "review". Well, actually, it wasn't even a review it was a rant about a negative experience. I don't believe any credible retaurant reviewer would post such a negative rant as a "review" after a place has been open only a few weeks. So, I seriously question your cred because of this.

Uh huh. When did a review begin to consist of only bullet points? I'm just glad that "[he] had finally ate [his] dinner." Interesting, given the barrage on the server for her mispronunciation of "Miller Lite."

What's worse is the article appears on the homepage of louisville.com, I guess they have no standards for what type of material they put online.

Too much went wrong to weave the review into a narrative. The piece was long enough just with bullet points; a traditional article would've been twice as long.

I first came across the forum about a week ago and had signing up on my to do list. Seeing this thread gave me the motivation to register. I'll be back.

And why such animosity toward a negative review? Louisville has so many great restaurants, the bad ones should be called out so they can be avoided.

Psst ... Brian ... feel free to disagree with the new guy, but let's keep it civil. One easy test: If you feel like typing in a comment with a tone that might earn you a punch in the mouth in face-to-face conversation, keep it to yourself, take a deep breath, and type something nicer. (Not just aiming at you but reminding the choir that "keep it civil" is one of our key rules around here.)
