Indianapolis Must Eats/See

by Bill Veneman » Tue Jan 13, 2009 2:51 pm

For the celebration of the 18th Anniversary of my 29th Birthday, I've decided to take Me, myself and I on a little road trip up to Indy for a weekend of "let's get the hell out of town".

Anyplace I shouldn't miss? Anyplace I should?

Will be staying downtown right by the Circle.

Thanks in advance.
If life's a Banquet, what's with all the Tofu?

Cheers!

My parents moved up to northern Indy/Carmel area a few years ago, so I go there every now and then. One of my favorite places is the Heidelberg Haus. It's a family-owned German cafe, bakery, and gift shop. They've got a really simple menu, but it's definitely comfort food (with tabletop squeeze bottles of spicy stoneground mustard). To top it all off, they've got a crazy kitchy German "general store" with lots of bric a-brac. :-)

The Wife and I were recently in Indy for the Celine concert and we stumbled upon Palomino restaurant.

Granted, it is identified as a chain, but I didn't know that. We enjoyed our dinner, and service was very good.

I haven't been there in about a decade, but if it's still basically unchanged, you can't beat Shapiro's. I wish Louisville had something similar.

Bruuge Brasserie in Broad Ripple. Great Belgian style brews and food, including probably the best pommes frittes I've ever had.

I second Bruuge- the forum directed me there a few months ago and I wasn't disappointed.

Nthing Brugge for great frittes and crepes.

For the special dinner though I'd go with R Bistro down on Mass Avenue.
