Check out this 1959 photo - just around the corner from the present-day relocated Lou Lou the First, Havana Rumba, Jack's Lounge, Equus, ... (And you thought the natives were just joshin')

And, a more recent aerial view of the structure....(Equus is at extreme top left corner of photo)

Great pics, Jay! I really love the picture I can now get in my head about that area, back when...( I didn't move here until 1997).

Thanks!

Love it, Jay. It brings such life to the phrase "you know where the old Sears was, right?"!

That's too funny! My husband and I were just talking about how people always use that store when giving directions. I moved here in 2002 and I can't tell you how many times I would hear about the "old sears building". People here give directions based on things that don't exist anymore..it's so frustrating!

We spent Friday nights at Sears with dinner in the coffee shop and a bag of chocolate covered raisons to take home. That was a 60s tradition....thanks for posting that great photo.

My only complaint about the constant referring to "the old Sears building" is that I am so damned old that I remember walking across the field before it was even thought of that had an old abandoned house that was widely reputed to be haunted.

Maybe the building is still haunted.

Thanks for the memories, Jay. Although not a native Louisvillian nor a native Kentuckian. I remember many a trip to the old Sears building (as well as the downtown Stewart's when we moved to Danville in '76. Having moved from the Twin Cites (Mpls./St. Paul) I was having serious "big town" withdrawal.
