Red Pepper Sichuan Banquet offline Nov. 7: Sign on here

by Robin Garr » Fri Oct 17, 2008 5:11 pm

The Red Pepper offline is a GO, provided enough forumites sign on. Mary and I went over today, found it fairly crowded, and had a GREAT lunch (the pan-fried tofu and a daily special of baby bok choy stir-fried with a LOT of garlic), and talked to Yuan Hua, the hostess.

She's got us all set up for an authentic Chinese banquet on Friday, Nov. 7. To avoid problems with the Friday crowd, she suggests we gather between 7:30 and 8, enjoy drinks in the bar, then settle down to our seats in the private room at 8 p.m.

Here are the specifics:

* Chef Huang will create a multi-course, authentic banquet involving numerous courses including lobster. He'll go out of his way to make it an exciting authentic Sichuan banquet with special ingredients and plate decoration.

* Price per person will be $30, exclusive of tax, tip and alcoholic beverges (they have beer and wine, no liquor).

* Time and place as above: 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, but it's okay to come in early and hang out in the bar or the party room.

* We need to get at least 18 people together to use the party room, and we'll have to cap attendance at 24.

* We need firm commitments by Tuesday, Nov. 2 (Election Day!) so we can confirm the number and give them time to do all the preparations.

18 is quite a few. I would think they would be open to 12 to 15 for $30 bucks a pop if they don't have a big party interested in the room. Anyway, I'd like to come but not a for sure. A strong maybe as of now.

Brian, that's probably correct, but I'd like to see the forum show Red Pepper some love ... and surely with wives, significant others and friends we can muster 18 or more for an event like this!

Anyway, hope you can make it, but please let us know for sure by Tuesday morning so we can give Yuan a firm number. :)

Don't we have a couple of Tuesdays in between before we have to make firm commitment? We don't have to commit by this coming Tuesday (10/21), do we?

D'oh! You're right of course, Rebecca! I guess I got confused because I so want the election to be OVAH! ;)

One other point - if the event is popular enough to fill 24 spaces, later registrants might have to go on a wait list, although maybe we could get them to let us spill over into the main room. :)

Steve Shade and Sandy will be there. Sounds like a great arrangement. Although I order from the "authentic menu" at the Oriental House, the banquet setup sounds great.

I hope the 30.00 per person does not scare off some people. Easy to spend that on food in better restaurants. This is an unique arrangement.

The price knocks me out of participation. I will pop in to say hello though, maybe grab some carryout.

I'm really surprised anyone would even raise that issue. This is a special banquet, with whole lobsters and other special treats, being put together by an award-winning Sichuan chef who has worked in Chinese embassies around the world. A dinner like this at one of the city's fancier places would be something like $70 to $100 per person. I regret if a $30 dinner is too much for anyone, but to be honest, anyone who doesn't understand the thinking behind this banquet might be happier getting takeout sweet & sour pork someplace.
