BLT, and other Hot Sandwich Challange...

by Dan Thomas » Fri Mar 28, 2008 3:00 am

It's out there...(refer to the BACON thread on the Kitchen link)

A couple of gauntlets have been thrown...

Per my suggestion, a Monday in August when our boys are in town!!! The 4th, 11th and 25 are there for the taking....

Any takers?

You know I am IN as a competitor. I would like to suggest we stay out of State Fair territory, so the early or middle date might be better.

Who are "our boys"...are we talking about the River Bats?

Locally grown tomatoes are fine. Just buy them from local providers, farmers' markets and the independent local retailers that carry them, and avoid the ch- ch- aw, I just can't say it!

That would be because you apparently don't support local farmers' markets either. Local hothouse tomatoes are in now. No fear of e. coli, no fear of sending your hard-earned local dollars off to Arkansas or anywhere else.

At the local markets, you can be sure that what you buy is fresh, and that is not the case at Kroger...
I bought an organic, free-range chicken for dinner this evening and when I cut the packaging open the gas which escaped was sickening! I had thought of that dish at Red Pepper people talk about called "Smelly Chicken"(or something like that)... except this was NOT good!!

Even if these large grocery stores do purchase local produce, it will still not be as fresh as what you can get at the farmer's markets. I have had good luck buying local produce at Whole Foods mid-week. You could always give them a try for local tomatoes as well. And they were suggesting August... the ones in the backyard should be ripe by then!

Bon Apetite!

Shouldn't be that long, Gretchen! The conventional wisdom here is "plant on Derby Day, harvest on the Fourth of July." More realistically, I've found that we can just about always count on ripe tomatoes in quantity in our garden by the middle of July, although last year we had a couple of early harbingers in June.

There's no use trying to persuade Robert that anything independent and local could be better than the product of a large corporation, by the way.

Robert, as everyone here understands, no one here is trying to change your opinions.

However, you are being boisterous and obnoxious in someone else's living room, and I have every right to ask you to behave well, regardless of whether you agree with us.

I accepted you back in the forum after a longtime banning because we all felt great sympathy for you with your wife's passing. We treated you as a friend, expressed compassion and tried to help. At that time I asked you to please not put me in this position again.

But now here you are, just a couple of months later, spamming and trolling the forum with contentious posts.

It is NOT what you think. It's the way you express yourself.

I am posting this in public because I frankly want my position to be abundantly clear, to you and to everyone. I have given you chance after chance after chance, but you must meet us halfway. And if you think this lecture is coming at you because you like chains and I don't, then I'm afraid there's no use in my beating my head against this particular brick wall any longer.
