Best brand of gas grill?

by TP Lowe » Sat Mar 24, 2007 9:12 pm

The incredible weather today has me thinking about a new gas grill to put on my deck that I built last fall. Costco has a nice grill that is a "Tuscany" brand (ok, I admit that appeals to me just from the name). But, I've never heard of the brand. Any recommendations or thoughts about that brand?

Gas grill brands.

by Doogy R » Sat Mar 24, 2007 11:59 pm

You'll get plenty of opinions here. Mine are Weber and Charbroil. I am sort of a low end guy, so the middle and high end people will surely offer their suggestions. I would say to do a lot of research on the web. Hopefully you know how to do that. If not, give me a PM and I'll help ya out.

Hey TP, I have had this model for 4 years now and have had no trouble with it at all. It has enough cooking room to handle enough food for 6-8 people if you are doing burgers and dogs. I like to do pork tenderloins and it will handle about 6 standard tenderloins at a time. I like low tech charcoal grills. About $50.00 at Lowes.

Hope this helps.

I would've posted a pic of my grill, but it's so old it's been discontinued. It's a Charbroil. Probably cost right at a C note. It has 2 burners and an upper rack for warming or grilling at a lower temp. Nothing fancy, just like me. :D

Make sure the burners are either brass or stainless steel - this prevents them from clooging with rust and flaming out on you. It will also keep them around longer. I had a cheap gas grill, even kept it in a shed and it lasted only 4 years. I have a Charbroil now that is kept outside covered(when I remember) with brass burners and it is going on 10 years.
I do not relish the task of putting a new one together. I don't have enough vacation time for that.
My next one will be a built in outdoor one - probably a Weber or Viking.

By far, the brand to go with (if you have $) is LYNX. They have full brass burners with an output of 2,500 BTU's per burner. They can be either fully costumized or they come housed in heavy stainless.

Here's the link to LYNX~

Go to the Wal Mart!!

by Dan Thomas » Mon Mar 26, 2007 3:29 am

I really hate to admit this, but the Wal-Mart has the best buys for a gas grill. As long if your not hung up on a brand name. The same model grill I bought from them 5 years ago, BRINKMANN (that is still working perfectly) is now available in a stainless steel?(Cast Aluminum?) version that is a couple of C-notes cheaper than anything else out there. And I'm talking about BTU's and features to boot. Those bastards from Arkansas have trained their Chinese counterparts well in the fine art of BBQ. You really shouldn't spend more than $300.00 for a quality grill that will be serviceable for more than 5 years. Think about how often you will actually use the thing(I use mine alot) as oppossed to the money you will spend on something that will fester under a plastic cover in your back yard

Weber - Genesis

by Doug W » Mon Mar 26, 2007 9:50 pm

I've had a Weber Genesis (Silver) for a few years now. It has held up very well. The only drawback is that you have to make sure you clean off the diffuser tracks annually or you can have heating issues... darn maintenance! Seriously though, a little check up now and then and a Weber will last a long long time.

Regards,

Doug

Gas grills

by Christopher Rieger » Thu Mar 29, 2007 11:44 pm

This is from an article in Consumer Reports from June 2006. They've always liked the Vermont Castings grills and I would look that direction if I had a few bucks to spend. I went to use my heavily modified grill last night only to find the venturi tubes were blown out. I had to broil the hamburgers instead of grilling/smoking them. Your mileage may vary here, but I'm sure you can find similar models for this year if you Google these model numbers. Just remember, you get what you pay for and those cheaper Wal-Mart grills have a very short lifespan.

Typical mid-sized grills:
• Vermont Castings VM400XBP (Home Depot) , $400, CR Best Buy
• BBQ Grillware GSF-2616 (Lowe's) , $200, CR Best Buy
• Char-Broil Advantage Series 463453305 (Lowe's) , $270, CR Best Buy
• Thermos Stainless 461262006 (Target) , $300, CR Best Buy

Cooking for a crowd:
• Brinkmann Pro Series 4400 810-4400-0 (Walmart) , $300, CR Best Buy
• Great Outdoors Pinnacle TG-560 , $500, CR Best Buy

I love modifying my grill as people often throw out their Wal-Mart grills after a season or two, but they often still have usable parts on them. A rack here, a new burner there - you can make a very interesting grill for next to no money so long as you're sure that fire insurance is paid up!

Yeah, unfortunately, I think so, just so I'll use it frequently rather than infrequently as I have with charcoal.

Buy your last grill first.
I had my grill for over 10 years and it's the best. No need to catch the drippings, everything burns off for more flavor.
Can be pricey, but as they state"Buy your last grill first".
