The Last Refuge - Bob Dylan - NULU

A 144-year-old church in Louisville's NuLu district could soon be home to a bourbon tasting room, art museum and live music venue.

"The Last Refuge" will be a brand center for music legend Bob Dylan's Heaven's Door Spirits, complete with a whiskey bar and restaurant, two-story art gallery and live music space.

I'm meh on the whiskey and celebrity alcohol brands in general, but more tourism dollars for Louisville is good, and I'm always happy to see adaptive reuse of our few remaining historic structures!

I echo these sentiments for the most part. But at least its fitting to the local scene and the Bob Dylan brand doesn't seem to be overplayed anywhere. And as mentioned, it claims to be a huge infusion of money that will certainly draw an interest from Dylan and whiskey and art fans.

The challenge now is to actually make it happen. There have been too many ambitious announcements that sit empty or partially empty for months/years before falling into the hands of another ambitious developer. That all said, it would be awesome if carried out, and in good company with some pretty cool stuff in the making at this time in Nulu.

It feels like Bob is knocking on Louisville's door!... How does it feel? Like a complete unknown!....... but ready to findout.

Opening date announcement should be at any time now. That place is going to be pretty cool.

The Last Refuge
We're quietly opening our doors this evening and throughout the rest of May with limited hours and a limited menu. Our proper grand opening will be later this summer, but you can join us tonight and get a taste of what's to come.

"Every pizza, no matter its toppings or style, has an ideal whisky match."

We couldn't agree more. Ours is inspired by Chicago tavern-style pizza: a thin, cracker-crisp crust cut into squares, designed to let the toppings shine.
And definitely made to pair with American whiskey.

We stopped in on Sat. for the "soft" opening. The service was a little weird. You can order cocktails at the bar, but when I tried to order food, I was directed back to the outdoor host stand in order to get a server. The space is beautiful and like nothing else in Louisville. We had the tavern style Chicago pizza and pork belly. Both were above average.

Thanks for the report. I'm looking forward to hearing from others. I'm not a big Dylan fan, but that space and locale is very important to Nulu. I wish him and his folks the best.

I'm not a fan of Dylan as a singer at all. Beside one pop up banner advertising his bourbon, you wouldn't even know he was involved. They weren't even playing his music, thank god.

I hear ya on the music part!

In any case, this was quite an investment since his art will be displayed along with his bourbon brand. The story goes that his handers had initially intended to drop anchor in Nashville. But someone had gotten word of this unique setting in Louisville. The rest is history in the making.
