This Cuban restaurant/bakery seems to have slipped under everyone's radar (including mine). I've driven past it so may times without stopping. Maybe it's because the sign simply says "Havana"?
Anyway, we were in the neighborhood (Fern Valley at Shepherdsville Road) at a laundromat because our dryer quit working last week. After perusing reviews on Google, we decided we would try it this week. It's in a less-visible location behind a used car lot and a strip mall, but don't let that fool you into thinking the food isn't legit.
My fiance and I got Cuban sandwiches (he's lived in Florida so he knows what they're supposed to taste like and says they're the only thing he misses about the state). The sandwiches come with fries, but we ordered yuca frites too because we're both yuca addicts (just ask the guy that owns Yummy Pollo). We also ordered one dessert item a piece. He picked Pastel de guava (guava pastry) and I got guava tart.
The food is delicious, and the prices are more than reasonable. $9.25 for a huge (10") Cuban sandwich with fries? I can't even get a fast food combo at that price. Two orders of yuca fries were $5.60, and they were NOT stingy on portions. The green sauce was also delicious and not spicy (and my sensitive stomach didn't balk at it, which is a miracle). Our pastries were $1.50 and $2.00 respectively. Two people can dine easily for around $30 here (although we got carry-out so we did not need beverages). Our total for 2 sandwiches with fries, 2 orders of yuca, and 2 desserts was $35 with tip.
The dessert displays are a feast for the eyes. I must try their tres leches soon. Loaves of Cuban bread are for sale, as well. They offer breakfast, coffee drinks, and juices. They have an array of Cuban dishes like bistec, lechon, masitas, and ropa vieja.
It's not a fancy place but is clean, well-lit, and has enough tables for people to dine in. Some of the counter staff are fluent in English, as my Spanish (especially my Cuban Spanish) is rustier than a 79 Plymouth.
Robin, you definitely should check them out!
