Gasthaus

by Christina Firriolo » Fri Apr 22, 2022 5:35 pm

I called to make reservations for the 30th for four people. She told me that she couldn't take reservations right now for that evening as they may only be open for carry out that night due to shortage of help. :(

I know they've been advertising for staff a lot on Facebook recently. It seems like it would be a fun place to work, and a great place to start if you know a young person looking for a job. (Plus I reallllly need my Gasthaus fix!)

As a matter of fact, Nina has posted a call for Gasthaus cooks in this forum's jobs board ... pass it on to any friends in the business, it's a great place to work!

I was just told something disconcerting. When calling to make a reservation, an acquaintance was told they are closing at the end of the month, doing take out only until then. Since I was not party to the conversation, I'm holding out hope that he misconstrued what was said, but it doesn't look promising. If true, I will sorely miss this place. More so than just about any place I can think of.

The Courier is reporting it. Behind a paywall.

Gasthaus has a Facebook post about the closing. As you'd expect, there are literally hundreds of people expressing sadness about the news. It's clearly a very special restaurant.

I renounce my religion. Gasthaus was the best & longest surviving German restaurant in the metro. Bavarian Dine Inn & Erika's are long gone. As far as I know this leaves us with no full service, full menu German restaurants on either side of the river.

I haven't been yet, but it's on my short list. Same folks that own/run Pints and Union so it has to be good.

Is there anyone here old enough to remember the name of a German restaurant out on Dixie Beach Highway? It was in a converted house, the kitchen was the home's kitchen with one single oven/four burner stove, and it served authentic German food made from Grandma's recipes (and by Grandma, who appeared to be the sole cook while the men sat around a tiny kitchen table reading newspapers and the daughter waited tables).

The food was greasy and good, the location was terrible, and it's likely it would totally fail modern health codes,

It probably closed down slightly over 30 years ago? At the time, it was the only German restaurant anywhere we could find.

Some people may like it but it certainly doesn't have the menu variety that Gasthaus had! It's basically sandwiches and appetizers with just a couple of entrée plates that don't give you a lot of options. That was what we liked about Gasthaus plus they had excellent desserts! Hopefully someone will take over Gasthaus and continue their great menu options!

I am so sad over this. I especially loved the strawberry napoleons. And I know I'll probably never have one like it again.

Andrew, Bob found this--very interesting site! The German restaurant off Dixie Highway was the Monarch Club. We used to go there occasionally probably 40 years ago.

For those few of you familiar with Valley Station/Kosmosdale, remember the Monarch Club, on the Ohio River? In a little river rat area (direclty on the Ohio) hidden away off Dixie Hwy, it was a German restaurant somwhat popular with the Fort Knox crowd.

The Monarch Club... The Bavarian Dine Inn (originally was the Monarch Club)... Out Dixie, Peggy Butt, was an interesting person

My thoughts exactly, and I’m not that much of a dessert person. We always wanted the six o’clock time slot to ensure we’d get one. The first thing we would tell the server was please reserve a Napoleon, or two.

OK, where Big Four was. Their pedigree is hard to beat so I'll definitely get over, probably on a bridge walk. I love German beer halls & their food for their niche but I wish we still had some German restaurants.
