Where can I get a good sandwich?

by Will Terry » Wed Mar 13, 2019 12:06 pm

I'm looking for a deli style sandwich... Stevens and Stevens was good, but I feel like there has to be a better option. I'd love a local version of Jersey Mikes (but better food!). Does such a thing exist?

We ate at Shapiro's in Indy and it was fantastic (though not exactly what I'm looking for)

In my opinion, Stevens & Stevens is hard to beat for deli-type sandwiches. Morris Deli on Taylorsville near Bardstown is good, but there's a non-zero chance of running into Mitch McConnell there if he's in town. The Cheddar Box in Chenoweth Square? I'll take Stevens & Stevens, though.

I agree with Robin. I don't know of any better deli in town. Stevens gets my vote!

Frank's Meat & Produce on Preston by the fairgrounds is a solid choice (get ready to loosen your belt buckle).

They're not fancy sandwiches but the ones we get from Morris's Deli on Taylorsville Road are always super satisfying. They're not NYC-Stage-Deli-league but it's hard to beat their smoked turkey. Also, the country ham is just fantastic. Now I'm wondering why in the world I haven't asked for a club with country ham....

There are a few tables but it's mostly a grab and go kind of place. I can tell you the chicken and tuna salads are fantastic and my daughter loves their chili. Plus, I've always had over the top, friendly service.

Wiltshire Bakery & Cafe served me the best chicken salad sandwich that I’ve ever had.

They also do a mean croque madam.
As far as general sandwich places, I echo the others. Stevens & Stevens for about the closest you’ll find to an NY style deli and Morris’ for their country ham or smoked turkey. So far, no Mitch-related incidents at the latter, but I’ve been practicing my heaving sigh, eyerolling, dramatic turnaround exit just in case. A skill I’ve been honing for Havana Rumba as well.

Wiltshire Pantry is my favorite sandwich place, too, but some other places I like are Red Hog and the counter at Lotsa Pasta.

Excellent additions to the list, Iggy. As in, "I wish I had thought of that ... "

Lotsa Pasta makes a delicious deli sandwich, and if you're in the mood for an Italian beef, there's no better (imo) than Lonnie's!

Their muffuletta is surprisingly authentic. I love it!
