LA Times Dining Critic Jonathan Gold dies

by Robin Garr » Sat Jul 21, 2018 9:41 pm

He was only 57, taken with horrifying speed by pancreatic cancer. Jonathan Gold did the job right. He'll be missed.

Excellent article. I wasn't familiar with him or his work, but he sounded like a true craftsman, and an amazing person. Very sad that he was taken so young and so incredibly quickly.

So true, Kim. I thought I misread at first when it said he was diagnosed in "early July," but apparently not. :(

Here's an interesting piece he wrote in 2015 about restaurant critic anonymity. It's a good read and gives a sense of his style.

I loved it, Robin, and I love his style. Honestly, if I didn't know better, I'd swear he was British. Just some of that dry Anglo-style humor, but maybe that's me. I had gotten a sense of him in the first article you shared, so I wasn't surprised to feel him make me laugh, think, and, well... kick off my shoes. I'm sure that little town will miss him dearly. I will, and I just met him.
