Speaking of Silvio’s, the calamari win redemption

by Robin Garr » Wed Jun 01, 2016 1:27 pm

When I reviewed Silvio’s last month, I praised everything it had … but had to declare the calimari “disappointing … competently fried, not greasy, but they weren’t crisp, and the tentacle bits were tough and rubbery. The marinara was the best part.” Proprietor Bill Melillo was quick to respond, assuring me that he was working on that. We returned, and I’m delighted to report: problem solved. They were great, piping-hot and crisp, as they should be. The rings in particular were tender and flavorful, with a nice crunch to the light breading. And the marinara remains outstanding. Good work, Silvio!

Rick's Avenue Grill had the best calamari in town. Calamari Inferno as it was called. Cut into strips rather than rings, which I prefer.

You know Rick is out at Blackstone Grill in Prospect now, Neal. I wonder if he's still making something similar?

Yep, Rick Dissel and the Chef, Ronelle Sims are still offering that style of calamari at Blackstone Grille in Prospect.

First dinner date out in probably a year... We went to Silvio's.

I regret nothing (other than eating all the carbs!)

Chef Silvio (I assume his name is Silvio!) stopped to chat with us and was a wonderful host. Service was spot on, quick without being pushy and friendly. Food was superb. Bruschetta was tasty.

I got the Silvio's Chicken (the chef looked at me in shock... "you got the healthy dish!"). It was well made and healthy! The risotto was on point. Creamy and delicious. Trying to be healthy, I only ate some.

My wife got the baked ziti... my taste of it was good... The sausage is fennel forward with a nice spicy kick at the end. She also said her Bellini was good.

All said and done, it was a good meal served by nice people. I'm looking forward to going back.

For the record, it's Bill Melillo, whose wife Michelle used to run Melillo's on East Main. But I think his nickname is Silvio, and hence the name of the eatery. I like it too.

Close, but Bill's sister was the one who owned Melillo's on Market. His wonderful wife Karen is often also in the restaurant with him. Our daughters were high school friends and he treats us (and everyone else) like family every time we go in!

Oops! I thought from the beginning that Michelle was his wife. Now I'm trying to remember the name of her daughter who also worked there. Nice family, even if I was wrong about the connections.

Robin,

If it's not too much trouble, could you post a link to your original review referenced in the original post?
