NYC Trip Report

by JustinHammond » Mon Sep 05, 2016 11:54 am

Wed.

Yakitori Totto - must visit, best meal/experience of the trip
http://www.tottonyc.com/

Thur.

Dominique Ansel Bakery - lucked into a Cronut
http://dominiqueansel.com/

One World Trade Center - worth the money. Go on a weekday, buy tickets in advance, and go early.
https://oneworldobservatory.com/

Añejo Tribeca - food was hit and miss, some ok (pork tacos), some very good (pork belly tostada). Cheap lunch $13
http://anejotribeca.com/

Blind Tiger Ale House - fantastic beer list
http://www.blindtigeralehouse.com/

Big Gay Ice Cream - Salty Pimp was a hit
http://biggayicecream.com/treats/

Shelter - crazy building, very close to Brooklyn (L) subway stop, pretty good pizza.
http://shelterbk.com/

ESH - went for the rooftop bar and octopus. Rooftop closed and they were out of octopus. Interesting cocktails anyway
http://eshbrooklyn.com/

Northern Territory - Brooklyn - rooftop bar/restaurant, pretty good view of Manhattan, good beer and cocktails.
http://www.northernterritorybk.com/

Greenpoint Beer & Ale Co. - Fantastic small batch brews
http://www.greenpointbeer.com/

Brooklyn Bowl - fantastic live music venue, awesome food, bowling, QuestLove DJing. Pork Rinds, Pigs in Blanket, Fried Chicken, Smoked Wings, Collard Greens
http://www.brooklynbowl.com/brooklyn/

Fri.

Le Bernardin - very good, simply prepared food, ingredients are the star. Fine dining to the extreme, too much so for me.
https://www.le-bernardin.com/

Central Park - walked from 59th entrance to 92nd, various attractions
http://www.centralparknyc.org/

Gray's Papaya! - iconic hot dog shop, 2 dogs and a soda $6
http://grayspapayanyc.com/

Seamstress - great cocktails and snacks. $1 happy hour oysters, biscuits, fried potato wedges, fried cauliflower, pickles.
http://www.seamstressny.com/

Sky Terrace at Hudson New York - rooftop bar at our hotel. Great views, get a beer, not a cocktail.
https://www.morganshotelgroup.com/hudso ... ky-terrace

Fuku+ - David Chang spicy chicken sandwich joint. Cool spot overlooking Ma Peche, but the food was highly disappointing. Chicken sandwiches were either severely overcooked or old.
https://fukuplus.momofuku.com/

Milk Bar Bakery - crack pie, compost cookie, corn cookie, confetti cookie. Worth a stop if in the area, wouldn't make a special trip.
http://milkbarstore.com/main/menu/

Sat.

North River Lobster Company - must do. Great food and an great 45 min. "free" Hudson River tour.
http://northriverlobsterco.com/

High Line - elevated walkway/garden, great spot for a walk
http://www.thehighline.org/

Chelsea Market - cool spot, but too packed to enjoy
http://www.chelseamarket.com/

Green Gallow - McKittrick "Hotel" - speakeasyish rooftop garden/bar, cool building
http://www.mckittrickhotel.com/gallow-green/#McKittrick
http://www.mckittrickhotel.com/#McKittrick

Lombardi's - iconic pizza joint for a good reason
http://www.firstpizza.com/

Mothers Ruin - neighborhood cocktail bar
http://www.mothersruinnyc.com/

Russ & Daughters - jewish deli, smoked fish, bagles, ect
http://www.russanddaughters.com/index.php

Mayahuel - tequila and mezcal mecca and the food is great too
http://www.mayahuelny.com/

Thanks for the report, Justin. It makes me miss NYC, and also confronts me with how much it's changed since we lived there in 1990-94. And now I want to go back!

Justin- you are a beast! I can only imagine how exhausted you must have been at the end of each day- but certainly full of good food and cocktails.
Thanks for the report, like Robin it made me homesick too.
I was pleased to see someone else not impressed by Chang's food- I thought it was over-rated.

Hasn't Pete Wells been writing about that recently? Too many Chang operations in too little time, and they're starting to slip?

The beastly part is getting from place to place, eating and drinking is easy.

From Wed. at 8:00 p.m. till Sat. at 8:00 p.m. we covered 25 miles on foot, and who knows how many using the subway, cabs, and Uber/Lyft.
