PEPPADEWS©

by Don Wagaman » Tue Jul 01, 2014 1:58 pm

I just discovered Peppadews© and love the concept! Is anyone else enamored with this product?

The first truly new fruit to be launched on the world market since Kiwi Fruit some 30 years ago, the story of the Peppadew® Sweet & Spicy Fruit is as intriguing and endearing as its taste.

I'm a fan! Whole Foods usually has them for sale by weight in their olive bar.

I called Whole Foods Market and they claim to have them in jars also. I bought a case from the Peppadew USA web site - only $39.00 with free shipping. I have made a Peppadew Cheddar cheese spread from an original old south Pimento Cheddar cheese recipe and it was absolutely fabulous! I will have lots of experimentation in the next month...

Basically a standard pimento cheese with chopped peppadews in place of pimentos? Sounds like something that I could eat!

This is what I use - an old Southern Living recipe, modified slightly...

Ingredients
6-cups freshly grated sharp Cheddar cheese (1 1/2 lb.)
1-package cream cheese (8-ounce), softened
1-cup Duke’s mayonnaise
1-tablespoon finely grated yellow onion
1-teaspoon ground red pepper
1-cup mild Peppadew© peppers, drained and chopped
Preparation
• Beat Cheddar cheese, cream cheese, mayonnaise, yellow onion, and ground red pepper with a heavy-duty electric stand mixer at medium speed 1 to 2 minutes or until blended but not smooth.
• Add Peppadews©; beat 1 to 2 minutes or until Peppadews© are shredded and mixture is blended and somewhat smooth.
• Serve with crackers or on sandwiches.
• ENJOY!!!

Outrageous when grilled between a good rye bread...

Thanks, Don! Looks good. The addition of cream cheese to the mix is new to me, but now that the idea is in my head, I'd like to see how it works.

So are these things fruit or proper peppers? And what makes them so special?

The Kroger store nearest my home just opened up a gourmet cheese selection and a very nice olive bar. I was quite impressed for a Kroger. They had peppadews (two varieties, red and golden) on the olive bar. I treated myself to a few. They are as wonderful as you said. Delightful. I think maybe chopping into a potato salad or pasta salad of a sort. Gotta think of something because simply standing in the open refrigerator door noshing them is a bit tacky.

Love Peppadews-haven't had any for quite a while ( I may need to change that).
They are wonderful as an appetizer too, stuffed with softened goat cheese or cream cheese. :D

I continue to find dishes that go up on the enjoyment scale when Peppadews are added...
