Forum ch- ch- changes TODAY, probably ...

by Robin Garr » Sun Jun 22, 2014 1:27 pm

(ADDITIONAL UPDATE: We're just about done! Mess with it, try to break it ... )

(UPDATE: We'll likely do this today, maybe early afternoon. The forum may be down for a while during the period that this is a hard-hat zone.)

Git ready! The woooorrrrlllld is coming to an end!

Well, okay, really it's not. But some software changes are coming to the forum in coming days. We've been operating on an older version of the PhpBBS software and really need a signicant update to keep us from being taken over by Viagra ads and Nigerian princes with deals we can't resist.

Because of this change, the current "skin," the look and feel of the forum, will also undergo a dramatic change, similar to your favorite local bar hiring a bunch of New York interior designers to come in and paint the walls purple and get rid of our beloved lava lamps. Okay, not that either. But we will get a new look, and some of the familiar buttons and functionality will move around or be mysteriously disguised by new icons.

Seriously, please be patient. The forum should be safer, faster, and in the long run, easier to read and to use. I know that change can be rocky, but please take deep breaths, and ask about stuff that doesn't look right. We'll get through it, and then we'll throw a party.

Party! Party! Paaar-taaaayyy! 8)

I am also afraid of change. Pennies, nickles & dimes; mostly terrify me. Quarters; not so much.

Hmm ... tempting! Actually, I don't think that functionality exists in PhpBB, though; and to be honest, I'm not sure I'd favor it. I mean, I'm all about Facebook too, but to me, the ideal forum discussion is better as an intelligent conversation with back-and-forth talk, not just a stack of high-fives.

Still, you can always do this ...

Or even this!

In lieu of a Like button how about a Recommend button?

And the difference is ... ?

What I told Leah, Mark. PhpBB doesn't have that kind of functionality, and I really don't care, because a stack of +1s or "Like"s or whatnot doesn't really add substance to the forum. Post "+1" if you like ... that's a reasonable response. But actually saying something is even better! :)
