Holy Grale with Kids?

by Deb Hall » Mon Dec 31, 2012 4:24 pm

All,
Our NYE dinner party is cancelled due to weather, and looking for a casual place with great food to go with our 8 year old tonight. We need a regular menu, both to insure there is something for Aiden and to keep it reasonable. I checked and both Feast and Hammerheads are closed :( . We were thinking maybe Holy Grale or Against the Grain, potentially Bank Street. I'd love to try Holy Grale- neither of us has been- but not sure if it's kid- appropriate. We'd be going very early- likely there by 6:00 if that helps.

Thoughts?

I believe the Grale is 21 and up, if bank street or ATG doesn't work you may want to check out eiderdown, The Silver Dollar or Manny & Merle's (haven't been though so I can't vouch for the place).
if you can hold off until tomorrow we open up at 5pm.

Holy Grale is definitely 21 and up. I was in there once and a family—mom and dad, grandma and a couple of kids—came in and were told that it was adults only. They looked offended, but that's the house rules. (I doubt there's anything on the menu that would appeal to most kids, anyway; it's a lot of bar bites, and rather offbeat ones at that.) Just wanted to let you know that so you aren't that family!

Good luck in your search, and definitely check out the HG when it's just you grownups. :-)

Thanks, guys! I couldn't tell from their site how truly "bar" they are.

Ryan- while we are craving your place, unfortunately tomorrow won't work- I've got a Nueske's ham in the frig that needs to be used for New Years dinner tomorrow. Hope to see you soon!

sorry deb, had i seen this earlier i would have invited you to baxter. on the flipside... if a place does a certain volume in food, there is no rule excluding kids, other than anyone under 18 can not sit at the bar.
on a total aside, when i was in frankfort renewing my liquor licenses, i was visiting with the most awesome ABC person in the world. the conversation gravitated to how i want to do breakfast and how sunday brunches would blow up if we could do champagne and bloody mary bars ( as every major city allows ) and her response was...'andrew, there is no law on the state books that prevents alcohol sales before one p.m... it;s up to local jurisdiction'. something to think about.
we are a huge convention city, have the urban / bourbon trail and no one in metro government is thinking about this...

Sounds like a great article/job for Marsha.

Certainly sounds like something that could easily be presented to the powers that be. Heck you can buy package hard stuff on Sunday now.

Kinda had to chuckle when I read this. We previously lived just outside a small town in Minnesota (think Shelbyville) and on our last New Years Eve before moving we -walked- a mile and a half in a blizzard and 14 inches of new snow to get to "Babes", the local sports/music bar. When we got there there the parking lot was overflowing with "sleds" (snowmobiles), Quads and 4WD's. Inside the place was rockin' out and the beer flowed freely into the wee hours. :D (Granted, we weren't towing a 10 y.o. behind us)...

Steve,
I grew up in Chicago- we drive in pretty much everything. It wasn't me that cancelled- a close friend's husband has balance issues and the threat of ice deemed it safer to wait to another time.
