meat and produce

by Trisha Dunn » Mon Nov 14, 2011 10:46 pm

Is there a local link, or does anyone know of a list with local butchers? And, produce? It's hard to find places that sell local meats or meats sold without hormones, pesticides, humane treatment, etc...

Mike Best / Westport Village / meat .. large selection of on site made sausages .. deli-eat in or takeout

Franks Meat and Produce .. Preston & Phillips Ln. butcher and deli.

Kingsly Market .. Taylorsville Rd .. butcher and deli.

I don't know about hormone free etc at the above but all good.

Bardstown Road farmers market is open year round except for a few weeks in December. Hours are 8 to noon and during the winter 10 to noon. Among others you will find Dreamcatcher Farms (beef & pork) and Duncan Farms (bunnies). Both of these are what you are looking for. Needless to say they will be more expensive than Krogers. Probably Kennys cheese and Caprilot (sp) (goat) cheese will be there.

Not much if any produce available this time of the year but the various farmers markets will have in season and also Dreamcatcher and Duncan will be at some.

You may also want to look @ Grasshooper Distrobution if want are thinking the CSA route. They have tons of organic / local produce, meats, dairy, & staples. They are extending the produce to year round this winter. http://grasshoppersdistribution.com/

Hi, Trisha! Glad you found your way here. Although Mike Best, Kingsley and Frank's are much loved local butchers, I don't think they specialize in the kind of meat you're looking for. The Bardstown Road Farmers' market is good advice, though. Ditto the small Phoenix Hill market at Felice (former Melillo's parking lot) where a couple of good producers may stay into the winter. Rainbow Blossom sells some naturally produced local meats, usually frozen though. And Whole Foods has the hormone/additive free product but mostly not locally produced.

Burger's market has a small but very good butcher counter too.

If you want locally raised meats, I'd check out the Root Cellar:

http://louisvillerootcellar.com/

He has a great selection of all varieties of poultry (I think it's all free range), lots of locally raised, pastured pork, bison from KY Bison co, grass fed (but not all grass finished, I believe) beef, etc. Mostly from producers you would come across at Douglass Loop, Deer Park or St Matthews farmers markets, except he's open at times other than Saturday morning.

We get a lot of our meat at Foxhollow Farm. It's better to order ahead, especially if you want fresh instead of frozen.
