Where's the best place to buy inexpensive hams?

by Jeff Cavanaugh » Fri Nov 11, 2011 2:22 pm

My wife and I are in charge of buying hams for a Thanksgiving meal at church next week. Where's the best place to get relatively inexpensive hams to feed a crowd (~100 people)? We were planning to try Costco on Saturday, but if anyone has a recommendation for someplace better, let me know. Fully cooked and spiral-sliced preferred.

I have heard good things about Aldi's spiral-sliced hams. I'm sure they are probably the cheapest per lb out there.

I bought an Alid ham yesterday. I cooked one this summer and it was great!

Maybe GFS, too.

I wouldn't bother with Costco- their spiral-cut ham is very good ( no more Honey-baked for us), but they are more expensive and you'll need alot to feed 100 people.

As you know, I don't eat meat, but I do see a LOT of hams in the carts at Aldi. They must be good!

I did an Aldi's ham last year on the recommendation of the Forum and it was one of the best that I have tried. Would certainly endorse your trying them for your church function.

Absolutely go with the Aldi's spiral ham. Excellent product. Usually only available from October until Easter, for whatever reason. We wanted one this past summer and couldn't find them. The manager said they'd be back by November.

Check out their holiday catalog at:
http://aldi.us/us/html/offers/weekly_ads_ENU_HTML.php

They're $1.69 a pound right now, 8-pound average.

Fully cooked. Pre-sliced. Includes glaze packet.

In additon, I'm quite fond of the Kentucky Legend brand of ham they sell at Kroger.

Thanks for the recommendations on the Aldi hams, all. They were a big hit. They were so good, in fact, I'm not sure why anyone would pay more anywhere else (for a non-organic, conventionally farmed ham, anyway).

Jeff, it warms the cockles of my heart that you liked the ham from Aldi's. Seriously. I think it's pretty darned awesome, for the price. We have a lot of favorite items we pick up there on a regular basis.

BTW, their Belmont brand PEACH pie is possibly the best you'll find this side of an orchard. (The apple's "okay" but the peach is amazing.) And don't get me started on their sweet potato casserole with praline topping.
