Best route - Northeast Louisville to Rough River

by Ryan G. » Tue May 24, 2011 2:20 pm

Hello all,
For those that drive from Louisville to Rough River (specifically to areas near the Rough River State Park), are there any “gotchas” with the I-71/I-64/IN-135/KY-79 route? Do you consider this route the most efficient (as far as total travel time)? Particularly, I’m wondering about the IN-135 stretch and KY-79 between the river and Irvington. Gotchas could include a large number of stop lights or really just anything bad enough that you avoid the route at all costs.

I’m aware of at least three ways that most people from Louisville get to Rough River; (1) Dixie Highway/US-60/KY-79, (2) I-65/Western Kentucky Parkway, and (3) I-71/I-64/IN-135/KY-79. I’d like to hear people’s opinions on which is the most efficient (time-wise) route. Until now, I’ve always gone the Dixie Highway/US-60/KY-79 way. But from my location in the Northeast part of town, I’m thinking the I-71/I-64/IN-135/KY-79 way may be better.

Ryan, I hope you get sound practical advice from those who've actually tried various routes, but just for starters, Google Maps recommends the Dixie route (Watterson from Prospect to Dixie to 79), and when you map it, it certainly appears to be the closest approximation to a straight line.

That being said, it also shows all three routes as being within three minutes of each other, all just a bit under two hours.

Google map link ... you can click around the "suggested routes" in the left column to compare.

Ryan,

As much as I can't stand the Western KY Parkway, I think that is the route with the fewest potential pitfalls. I've done it a gazillion times and think it makes the most sense. But I'm not a fan of the two-lanes in most of KY ....

Care to elaborate? I'm driving to Memphis tomorrow, and had planned to take I-65 to the W.K.Y. Parkway to the Purchase Parkey, etc. I despise 65 between E-town and Nashville (too many trucks), and don't prefer going through Nashville.

I've tried all three myself and I just like the drive up through Corydon and down through Irvington myself. I don't like driving through the traffic or up that hill outside Ft. Knox on Dixie.
They are really about the same time wise, within about 10-15 minutes of each other, so depending where you are going on the lake, that would be my deciding factor. If you are heading to North Fork or Axtel then I would choose coming down KY-79. If you are going to the State Park by the dam or Lafayette Golf Course development down the road then I would shoot over on the WK.

I'd just like to follow up that I really enjoyed this route. I took I-65 to the Western KY Parkway to the Purchase Parkway, then US 51-S through Tennessee down to Memphis. The Kentucky Parkways were fine with almost no traffic and 70 MPH - I set cruise and never took it off. Most of US 51-S through Tennessee ranges from 65 MPH to 70 MPH, with a few stretches at 55 MPH and stoplights, though few and far between. It was about 20 miles shorter, roughly, than 65S to 40W, and took about the same amount of time, perhaps a few minutes less. The best part - my blood pressure spiked only once or twice, compared to the near-constant cardiac event that I experience everytime I take I-65.

I got to Nolin a lot and I take the I-65 to the WK.

Not sure if you have traveled on the WK recently or not, but in the last 3 years they have resurfaced it and it is really nice now.
