Good point. I believe their first venture was called "Les and Mark's." And wasn't it downtown? Fifth and Liberty? Someplace around there. Les and Mark got a (corporate) divorce and Les reopened as the Nosh Box, either downtown or Hurstbourne. I eventually met Les, very nice guy. I never knew Mark.

Well, there you go.

5th and Liberty or 5th and Jefferson? Was it in the basement of the Ky Home Life Bldg, maybe??
I agree that Les is a good guy. Mark was ... Mark.

I LOVED the food! I still remember that pizza, which we thought was "Sicilian" - it was made in a very shallow bowl, as I recall - I was just a kid. I also remember an older woman (your great-GM?) encouraging everyone to add a little oregano to their pie. None of our friends even knew what orrey-gahno was!

i will certainly ask her if she was the one pushing the oregano!

anyone remember liberty street restaurant in the galleria? my dad was employed in their kitchen for a few years. when mr. and mrs. linn bought it and turned it into a chinese restaurant, they kept dad. they changed the name to panda liberty street. i was in grade school then and spent a lot of time in that place on weekends just kind of hanging around. i wanted to "help out" and mrs. linn would let me roll silverware and sweep the floor. mr. linn would always bring me out a big bowl of chicken fried rice. that's all i ever ate there. can't say i remember anything about the other dishes. they were just really nice people and i hated to see that place go.

I'm sure I remember reviewing it. Middle to late '80s, the Galleria was still pretty new? Upstairs on the north end, west side of Fourth? I don't have a vivid recollection, but remember an attractive space with decent, upscale fare.

Well, we blew out of town for NYC from 1990-94, so I can't testify. But I know I reviewed a nice second-floor eatery in the old Galleria before I left, and I'm pretty sure it was Liberty Street Café.

Back in the 60s my mother and father had 2 different restaurants... one was on Armory St called Franklin Way the other was out near the u of l campus on South Fourth called Fourth Ave Cafeteria. (I believe it is now a laundrymat. -heavy sigh-)

I remember it. I think it replaced Alexanders in that location (note: not J. Alexanders).

One of them, Alexanders, I think, had terrific bouillabaisse. Nothing else memorable.

Okay, memory jogged. I reviewed Alexanders in the Galleria in the late '80s. I guess Liberty Street came after I left the CJ.

Yes I do! It was my very first kitchen management job back in 89-90. Kinda where I got the bug to pursue cooking as a career. I think the people who owned it then were the Reinhard's? I think they had an insurance agency up 4th St. somewhere and their son David was the GM/Owner whom later had political aspirations.. The pantry person was a surly, older Japanese woman named Michiko who could make some amazing salads. She would throw knives at you if you provoked her by asking for anything out of the ordinary. The line was an impractically large closed V shape that you could only get behind from either end with a sunken "prep" area in the middle. The POS system was an ancient NCR set up more suited to retail than restaurants. I learned many valuable lessons in my short time there.

when i was first here about 10 years ago, i worked downtown. I enjoyed trying out different places on my lunch hour. The one that i liked the best was a small place called Dmitri's.... i might have that spelling wrong or be missing a word. I really enjoyed eating there. I do not remember exactly where it was, just that it was no more than four blocks from 2nd and Muhammad Ali.

It was Les's Deli, The location is currently called Down to Lunch. I also worked at Les's for a brief time delivering sandwiches one summer when I was in high school. Les had the closest thing to a New York Deli I believe this city has ever had. He is still around catering now.

  • Pete's Cajun '99.
  • Cafe Jopa. I still find myself wanting their fried chicken sandwich.
  • Sesame
  • Mama Grisanti's
  • Mazzoni's
  • Erhler's (okay, so it was not a full-meal restaurant)
  • Haywood's
  • Ginny's

I have fond memories of the times spent (as a child) at my Dad's favorites:

  • Sizzler on Bardstown Road at Bashford Manor Mall
  • Jade Palace, in the old Dairy Queen building (now a flat spot) in Jeffersontown
  • King Buffet
  • Danner's on Bardstown Road
  • Furlong's ... impatiently waiting for this one to come back

Edit: I forgot Ginny's! How quickly the mind wanders ... fixed.

Pete's Cajun 99 was originally the Cajun Cafe and that was Billy Fox's original restaurant in Louisville. In many ways the forefather of J. Gumbo's! I too miss the Cajun Cafe days, and Pete was a hoot!

I miss Allo Spiedo and the Salsa Grille. Those were frequent spots for us back when I lived on Frankfort Ave.
