Goose Creek server earns puny tip from Velocity's reviewer

by Robin Garr » Fri Mar 02, 2007 3:44 pm

Velocity's "Two for $30" column heads out to Goose Creek Diner just off Westport Road in the East End this week, and the writer (Lisa Hornung, I assume ... there's no byline on the Web edition) seemed happy with the food, but punished the server slightly with a 12.5 percent tip for inattentive service.

$3.34 is also $30.00-$26.66 that their meal cost. Can she go over $30 for great service? Otherwise, seems like the chintzy tip is more a function of the 2 for $30 than any particular service issues.

I have no problem with that personally. I typically always tip 15%. If I receive poor service it goes down if I receive great service it goes up.

I've served before. If everyone tipped 15% for good solid service, servers would be happy and make a lot more money.

If you click over and read the full article, though, you'll see that she specifically mentioned cutting down the tip because of poor service.

In this case, I'm not seeking to be judgmental, just reporting it ...

I saw that--just funny that the service is bad and penalized when a normal tip would take it above the amount allowed.

Isn't it odd that that the tip brings the total to precisely $30.00? I'm not being critical, because I tip based on service received. It's just that she rounded up to exactly $30.00. I think there should be a little leeway there and at least a 15% tip, unless the service was just totally terrible.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

I bet the really cheap places in town are dying for Lisa to stop by. "Let's see, the check is $16.00, so that would make the tip...14 bucks!"

I was a server and maybe it was just some absurd sense of entitlement but I expected 15% as a baseline and generally felt I deserved 20%. I personally always tip 20%, but I think that is just because once you are in the industry you can't do anything but that. I think that 95% of people tip 15% (when are you working in a slightly upscale place anyway, and most people tip more than 15%. The service would have to be terrible, rude or condescending for me to tip less than 15%.
