Interstate stops

by Gayle DeM » Tue Mar 30, 2010 7:35 pm

A dear friend is having surgery next week at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. On her way home she will have to get out of the car at least every two hours. Can anyone suggests stops along the way that have good food? She will be traveling out of Baltimore on I70 to Hagerstown; then I68 to Morgantown; I70 to Charlestown; and finally I64 back to Louisville.

Gayle,

Once she's past Charleston, there are some pretty good places in Huntington and Kenova, WV, or across the river in Ashland, that aren't too far off the highway.

Huntington:
*Jim's Steak and Spaghetti: almost every president since Kennedy has eaten there, historic, great spaghetti in a diner-esque atmosphere - 920 5th Avenue, Huntington, WV 25701-2004, (304) 696-9788

*Savannah's: upscale - http://www.savannahsmenu.com/

*Hibachi - good sushi/Japanese - 839 4th Avenue, Huntington, WV 25701-1406, (304) 697-0920‎

There are some other pretty good places close to Hibachi and Jim's in the heart of downtown and around Marshall's campus, which is maybe a 5 minute drive from 64.

Kenova:
*Evaroni's Pizza - Great pizza, very good sandwiches - 914 Oak Street, Kenova, WV 25530-1423, (304) 453-4355

Ashland:
*Chimney Corner Cafe - relatively upscale - http://www.chimneycornercafe.com/

*CJ Maggie's - casual, great pizzas and sandwiches - http://www.cj-maggies.com/

We travel that route once or twice a year. Know it like the back of my hand.

ABSOLUTELY tell your friend to stop in Flatwoods, WV -- about mid-way between Charleston and Morgantown, WV. It's just a wide spot in the road, but there's a store there that's worth the time to visit. It's called Amish Farms Bulk Food & Cheese where one can find all manner of every imaginable non-perishable food item -- grains, pasta, spices, dried herbs, seasonings, mixes, candies, snacks, etc. as well as farm-fresh meats, cheeses, fresh-ground peanut butter, etc., etc. It's all bulk packaged. They market largely to the Amish and feature Amish-made furniture too.

See http://www.flatwoodsfactorystores.com/ and, more specifically,
http://www.flatwoodsfactorystores.com/C ... rticleid=8
for directions and information on the other stores at this outlet mall just off I-79, Exit 67.

SECOND, I urge your friend to stop at a FLYING J truck stop and pick up a copy of a book entitled "The Next Exit". This giant paperback book is published annually and lists every interstate in every state in the country. It includes a listing for every single interstate exit, identifying every restaurant, motel/hotel, gas station, grocery store, pharmacy, Walmart and other retail store within a MILE of each exit and identifying whether the stores are N, S, E or W of the exit. It also lists all of the rest area by mile marker.

See a sample page at http://www.thenextexit.com/

It's available for $10.17 on Amazon at:
http://www.amazon.com/Next-EXIT-2010-Ex ... 887&sr=8-1

Your friend will be able to easily see what exits lie ahead. I wouldn't hit the road without my copy of The Next Exit!
