Stuck in Charleston, WV...any recommendations?

by Paul Beede » Sat Dec 19, 2009 3:55 pm

So my girlfriend and I are taking an unplanned vacation in Charleston, WV, thanks to the "Blizzard of 2009".

Any recommendations for good restaurants in town?

My recommendation: Get out of there! There are good restaurants within driving distance in the country and near D.C., but - so far as what's right there in town, that's rough.

I plucked these off a national foodie website:

Aubrey's Yorkshire Pub & Eatery
Blossom Deli
Chilton House
The Chop House
French Quarter Lounge
Laury's Restaurant
Tarragon Room
Wellington's of Scarlet Oaks

good luck!

We go to Charleston, WV on a regular basis but, sadly, end up eating at chains.

Of Marsha's suggestions, though, I can generally attest to the quality of the food at The Chop House. We've eaten at the one in Lexington a couple of times and the one in Murfreesboro, TN two or three times. EXCELLENT food!

Our trips to Charleston are generally limited to picking up dogs at the track or on the road to Gettysburg or Dewey Beach, so most meals are in the car, on the run or in the motel room because we are traveling with a pack of dogs.

Let us know where you end up eating. And have a safe trip home!

thanks for the recommendations and well wishes.

We ended up finding a bistro about a mile away from our hotel...called the Bluegrass Kitchen. They're a "locavore" restaurant...they say they use locally-grown products. Definitely one I'd recommend!

We may be stuck here for longer though, so we'll work our way down the list! :-)

Can you make it to Huntington (about 30 minutes east on 64)? I grew up accross the river from Huntington, and there are some good options.

Savannah's (http://www.savannahsmenu.com/)

Jim's Steak and Spaghetti - this place is a legend. Just about every president since Kennedy has eaten there. Diner style, with great spaghetti. Very inexpensive. 920 5th Avenue, Huntington, WV

Nawab's Indian

Hibachi Japanese - this place has been there forever, and is pretty good. First place I ever had sushi. There's a new place around the corner also called Hibachi, but this one is at 839 4th Avenue, Huntington, WV.

Rocco's - a pretty good, upscale Italian joint in nearby Kenova, WV

Evaroni's - also in Kenova, excellent pizza, been around since my parents were kids.

I know this thread is old, but I wanted to second the Bluegrass Kitchen recommendation. It really is a welcome addition to Charleston. Also, lots of options for those with vegetarian and vegan diets.
