Places to eat in Houston when work is paying

by Josh A » Mon Jul 20, 2009 11:27 am

At the end of the month work is sending me down to Houston, TX for a conference. I'm going to be there Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon, and am wondering if anyone has any ideas as to interesting places to eat so I can avoid the usual suspects.

Houston is a big place. Could you narrow down the area(s) in which you will be?

I'll be staying at "Houston Marriott West Loop by The Galleria" and the conference is apparently only a couple miles away from that, so that's as much as I really know.

Okay, Josh. I've just got of the phone after talking to my two best friends ever (both of whom happen to live in Houston at the present). Since I usually go to Houston two to three times a year, I've combined their suggestions and thrown out the ones with which they disagree and added my two cents worth.

Ouisie's Table http://www.ouisiestable.com/
Benjy's http://www.benjys.com/flash.html(I've eaten here and personally I think this is the place to go for lunch, brunch, or cocktails/happy hour.)
GiGi's http://www.gigisasianbistro.com/(This is a MUST if you like Asian food; is located in the Galleria.)
Post Oak Grill http://www.postoakgrill.com/ (Pretty high end, but the dessert are pure heaven. They also have martini and tapas evenings.)
Goode Company Seafood (http://www.goodecompany.com/goodeRestaurantSeafoodKirby.aspx Very casual & located in Rice Village. I have eaten here and they have a great compechana, like a seafood stew, but very southern coastal Mexico. Also many otherGulf Coast specialties. Mmmmm. One of my favorites.)
Lupe Tortilla http://www.lupetortilla.com/ (Both my friends say this is the place for the best beef fajitas in Houston.)
Trulucks http://www.trulucks.com/home.php
Pappas Brothers http://www.pappasbros.com/ or Del Frisco http://www.delfriscos.com/locations_full.php?lid=25 (Great steak houses, on the expensive side but we all agreed that you can do just as good here in Louisville.)
Masaraff's http://masraffs.reachlocal.com/
Damians http://www.damians.com/(This Italian is downtown; both of my friends said this is one of her favorites.)

I think I could spend the rest of my life here. It sounds awesome.

Thanks for the suggestions!

When you return, I'll be anxious to hear where you ate and what you thought of them. Enjoy and have a safe trip.

It sounds like you're downtown, but I spent a few days in nearby Sugar Land for depositions last year, and had a great meal at the Burning Pear, the restaurant in the Sugar Land Mariott. It was much better than most hotel restaurants. http://www.theburningpear.com/home.htm

We also had a great steak at Perry's Steakhouse, also in Sugar Land, in the same Town Square area as the Mariott. It's sort of a mini-chain with multiple locations in Houston and one in Austin. Great, upscale steakhouse. I would bet there is one closer to wherever you're staying.
