Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge suggestions

by Mark P » Tue Mar 17, 2009 10:09 am

Anyone have any dining suggestions for the Gatlinburg area. We will have six adults (4 Canadian) and my 2 year old...kid friendly is my main concern. Fine dining may be a bit much for some of the group so I'm looking along the lines of a $$-$$$ price range.

Gatlinburg...Mountain Lodge Restaurant (B/L only?)

Pigeon Forge....Old Mill Restaurant

...and in case you haven't been there before (or for awhile), there are LOTS of pancake restaurants.

If you do a search, a couple of months ago there was a long thread listing restaurants in that area

I've only been to Gatlinburg twice so I haven't been to all that many places. However, I do have 3 suggestions,
1. Stay away from the mexican restaurant on the strip, I think it's called No Way Jose or something like that. It was HORRIBLE and made me sick for the last evening of my trip!
2. http://www.parkgrillgatlinburg.com/ I've gone to this place both times I visited and I've found it quite good. They have a really nice salad bar and a pianist that takes requests!
3. Get a donut from this place in the morning before you do whatever else you're gonna do! http://www.thevillageshops.com/donut_friar/

Have fun!!!!!!

For pizza, I would recommend Guarino's. Get the Johnny G. special...it's basically a supreme pizza with feta cheese. Delicious! Here's their menu:

For breakfast (if you can get in), I would recommend the Pancake Pantry. The only caveat is this place is not for the faint of heart. If you're trying to eat healthy, avoid this place like the plague. They serve like half a stick of butter with the french toast and pancakes. No, I'm not exaggerating. The food is amazing. Heart attack-inducing, but amazing!

Hope you have fun!

might be headed to gatlinburg this fall. i want to know if there are some things outside the usual gatlinburg stuff we could try on our visit. i know about the aquarium and the go karts and putt putt and the shopping. been there, done that. there has to be more to the area than this. might be just us (couple, ages 25 & 26), maybe another couple or two.

Well, there's always the Smoky Mountains National Park...incredible scenery during the Fall and some great hiking trails...leave the go-kart tracks and outlet malls behind....

i did some searching last night and came across a restaurant called the peddler. the website says they come to your table with a big hunk of beef and carve your steak from it right in front of you. i thought that sounded kind of neat and i'm always down for a big juicy ribeye. it looked like it would cost us about a hundred bucks for dinner there with two steaks and maybe some drinks and (of course) a tip. has anyone been here? is it worth the price?

The Peddler and Park Grill (across the main drag) are owned by the same people, and have similar salad bar setups. Both are good (at least as good as it gets in the area). Do not remember carving tableside at Peddler when we were there, but this may be something added for the season to attract visitors (tourism really down in area)

checked the website . . . "custom carved" means that you tell them how big a steak you want, and they relay the info to the kitchen where it's cut to that size . . . they don't cut in front of you

And, the two are probably the two best places in Gatlinburg. Depending on how much you drink, can get away for much less $$$. I think their trout is better than the beef, but both are decent.

We went to Gatlinburg for Fall Break and visted a new to us restaurant and orchard called Carvers Applehouse Restaurant. It is in Cosby, TN about 30 minutes from Gatlinburg it's very easy to get there. The food was great.....I loved everything I had and by the way I got the chicken and dumplings both times. Did I mention that we went twice? Had the green beans and pinto beans both very good. My grandson had the coleslaw and ate every bite (and for a 4 year old that's good). The country ham is excellent as were the oven browned potatoes. I am a sucker for fried potatoes of any kind and these were great! The only thing that was disappointing for my husband was the chicken pot pie which he said was kind of skimpy inside but did have a good taste. He wished he had gotten the chicken and dumplings again like I did. You get a small glass of apple cider, apple fritters and apple butter with your entrees...yum yum! They don't have a website but here is the Dining in the Smokies site which has the address and phone # and a menu ( the best I can remember the prices are very close to being accurate). http://dininginthesmokies.com/_cosby/dccarver.htm They also have a market where they sell apples and produce and a candy shop. It's not a large place but a nice slow pace compared to the hubub at Huber's these days. The dining room has a wall of windows which overlook the orchard...what a gorgeous view! Can you tell we had a great experience? This will definately be a place we will go everytime we visit the Smokies from now on.....just like putt putt golf and pancakes. :D :D :D

In Sierville (Sp?) before you get into Gatlinburg proper, the Apple Barn has great homestyle food.

If you haven't been the Aquarium, it is actually pretty neat. Well worth the time and money.
Did any one mention pancakes yet? I think they have more per capita pancake houses than anywhere else on the planet. Pancake Pantry in Gatlinburg is probably the best, but the lines form early and the wait can be long.

We dined at "The Peddler" during an overnight in Gatlinburg last summer (en route to Hilton Head)...I don't remember the tableside carving either, but seem to recall they do bring a cart to the table displaying various cuts of steak. Food was very good (I had their prime rib), but the menu is typically not for the calorie-shy....Peddler offers an extensive salad bar. Within walking distance from the Hilton Garden Inn -- one of the newest (and better) hotel options in Gatlinburg.
