Alaska to Vancouver report

by Linda C » Sat Jun 22, 2013 7:19 pm

Although we cruised from Seward to Vancouver, we had some great local eats for any who may be doing the same. We got stuck in Seattle for a while, but had some great apps and local wines in the Vintage Washington wine Bar. I soon found out that nobody serves "krab" around here. Try the chunky hot crab dip.
We took the scenic train from Anchorage to Seward, which was fabulous. People said the food was good, we ate at the Crowne Plaza due to time difference.
We stopped in Juneau, where after a great hike we guzzled down ales at the famous Red Dog Saloon and listened to the very raunchy 74 yr old piano man, Baldini. Don't miss this! We sauntered across to the street to Tracy's Crab Shack, a basic looking place with crab to die for and a really cool vibe. http://kingcrabshack.com/
On a stop in Ketchikan, we had a delicious meal of steamers, crab dip and smoked salmon chowder at Annabelle's, a lovely old Victorian restaurant in he vintage Gilmore Hotel. fantastic. We picked up some great local salmon at salmonetc, which was recommended by our bartender for their knowledge, low overhead and best prices. Yum, they give unlimited samples as well. http://www.salmonetc.com/
In Vancouver, we had the most amazing lunch at the the Cactus Club cafe right on the beach with stunning views. The food and drinks were superb and the staff were the most gorgeous young men and women I've seen, although walking up and down stairs in spandex and stilettos should make you grumpy. http://www.cactusclubcafe.com/location/english-bay/
For dinner, we ferried to the Granville Island market and ate gourmet goodies from all the many vendors. Great day, I'd go back to Vancouver in a heartbeat. Very green, lots to see.

I used to go fishing in the Tongass N.F. outside of Ketchikan with a couple of friends every fall when the Silver Salmon and Steelhead were running. When we were in town we used to eat at a little place called "Roller Bay Cafe". They had the most awesome New England style Chowder which (depending on the day) contained at least seven different sea-foods.
