Charlotte - also Pinehurst/Southern Pines

Any ideas welcome. Charlotte so far seems pretty dull for a town this size. Not much funk factor. Haven't found a neighborhood like the Highlands or Broad Ripple, etc. Whole town seems to be upper middle class Rainbow bread clones. Even the black people are Rainbow bread here. Must be a Southern thing I don't get. Everywhere golf shirts....

Pinehurst/Southern Pines tomorrow so any ideas there also much appreciated.

Not much in Pinehurst either. Looks like everywhere in Suburban Chainland America. There is a pretty good Scottish pub called the Darling House, but unless you want to spend a small fortune eating at the Pinehurst resort, there's not any exciting dining there.
However, if you're golfing, there are a lot of great courses around there besides the Pinehurst tracks. Tobacco Road is probably the hardest course I've ever played. :D

For further reference if anyone goes to CLT:

Halcyon: expensive and good.
Bad Daddy's Burgers (supposedly top 25 nationwide): Overrated.
Cowfish (Burgers and Sushi fusion): excellent value.
Cafe Monte (supposedly French Bistro): Meh
