On only a few hours notice I'm being sent to Pittsburgh today and will be there for a week. Any recommendations, specifically in the areas just south of Pittsburgh (Canonsburg, McGovern, Washington)? Thanks.

I'm not up on Pittsburgh specifics, but as a Louisville food geek, you really owe it to yourself (and to us!) to see if you can get a Devonshire, which is Pittsburgh's cousin to the Hot Brown and boasts a very similar age and back story.

Definitely hit up a Primanti Brothers location and get one of their sandwiches, which are famous for including the french fries on the sandwich itself. http://www.primantibros.com/

And speaking of fries, if you can make it into Oakland, you might try the Original Hot Dog Shop ("The Dirty O"), a local dive that is famous for their MASSIVE portions of fries. http://www.hollyeats.com/OriginalHotDog.htm

As a follow up, in case anyone is ever in the area:

Pittsburgh proper: only one dinner as we were working and living about 20 miles south, but went to Monterey Bay. It was a very good, if a little overly pricey, seafood place overlooking downtown and the rivers from a bluff. Great views and very good/fresh seafood.

If you're ever south of Pittsburgh, I recommend Table, Jackson's, and Franco's Trattoria. The steakhouse at the Meadowlands Casino in Washington isn't bad - typical steakhouse fare.
