Going to Toronto area (actually staying a bit north in Newmarket) for 3 weeks in July. We will also be going to Niagara Falls for a night or two. Any suggestions?

I haven't been in years, but there are a lot of good dining options in nearby Niagra-on-the-Lake.

These place is on the pricey side, but the food and view are awesome. It used to include admission to the observation deck so if you are planning on going to the CN tower it makes the food prices look more reasonable.

Pretty cool mansion. Parts of Chicago and X-Men were filmed there. Great views of Toronto.

Good beer selection and pub grub.

The movie Boondock Saints filmed a few scenes here. It is a pretty authentic locals/Irish bar.

You can do Niagara Falls in a solid day. We were bored out of our minds on day 2.

I haven't been to Niagara (Ont) in a few years, but I recall a Brazilian steak place within walking distance from the Embassy Suites ("CopaCabana"??)....might try to look for it online... jg

Niagara Falls, Ont. is much better than Niagara Falls, NY That said, Brad's implecation is correct, Niagara-on-the-Lake is much better than Niagara Falls, Ont.

As to restaurants, I'll have to do some checking with some of my Ontario friends and see what is still open and what is new.

If you are looking for something to do one evening when you are down Niagara way try the Shaw Festival Theatres in Niagara-on-the-Lake, http://www.shawfest.com/Home/Playbill

On your way from the Toronto area to the Niagara area, you are amiss if you do not visit some of the Canadian wineries and sample the ice wines.

I have to rock the boat just a little. I wouldn't waste your time with Niagara on the Lake. Our group viewed it as a well-marketed tourist trap. We very well could have missed something, but the entire "downtown" area was a big tourist money pit. It was just a crowded street with restaurants and gift shops. I never got the feeling that anyone actually lived there, just a smart marketing plan to make money off people coming in from Toronto. I would spend an extra day in Toronto vs. seeing Niagara on the Lake or make a trip to Point Pelee, the southern most point in Canada. It is about a 5 hour drive from Toronto.

A lush Carolinian forest oasis at the southern tip of Canada, Point Pelee National Park resounds with migrating song birds in the spring, hums with cicadas in the summer, flutters with Monarch butterflies in the fall and is a peaceful place of reflection in the winter.

Oh, I'm not pushing downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake but the Shaw Festival and Fort George are something else again! Niagara-on-the-Lake is straight out of a Thomas Kinkaid painting and I've never been a fan of his. However the quality of plays at the Shaw Festival and the four distinct theatres make Actor's pale in comparison. Then there is Fort George, scene of several battles in the War of 1812. I just think it is fun to read historic plaques from a different point of view. Remember to them the USA was the enemy at that point.

And then there are the wineries and the ice wines. I've made trips up there just to go ice wine tasting!

If you head out to the Niagara pennisula from Toronto, stop for lunch at the Hamilton Farmers Market. It is a year round market in a large multi-storied building that includes a parking garage. Besides wonderful fresh produce there is a lovely assortment of ethnic food stalls.

Additionally you might want to make a trip to the village of Anacaster. Can't remember the name, but on the main street is a wonderful Italian gourmet grocery with the best selection of olive oils that I have ever seen/tasted.

Re: Niagra on the Lake, we were there years ago during the Shaw festival and saw some plays. I found it neat, but I was also probably 18 at the time.

You might also consider driving down to Port Colbourne (http://www.portcolborne.ca/) for a day. It's about a 45 minute drive from Niagra Falls, and sits right on the north shores of Lake Erie. I have cousins that live there - it's very pretty, with some good dining options.
