Pawley's Island/Litchfield Beach

by Brad Keeton » Tue Apr 27, 2010 11:46 am

We're looking to take a vacation to Pawley's Island, SC in July. Any recommendations? Generally, I'm hoping for options in the Pawleys/Litchfield area; I want to avoid anything close to Myrtle Beach at all costs.

Pawley's Island is a real gem. We've been there on vacation several times and I can't wait to go back. We stay at the Litchfield resort's Seaside Inn. It's very affordable and they offer several specials. Even though it's only 15 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Myrtle Beach, you'll feel as if you're someplace else. I hope you golf because it is a true golfer's paradise. Caledonia is one of the best courses in the country. We also enjoy Willbrook Plantation as well and both are beautiful.

If you're staying in a condo with an equipped kitchen. The best grocery store is the Piggly Wiggly by a long shot. Think Doll's and Kroger's combined.

The two best restaurants locally are Frank's which has a more casual setting Outback. Both are very good and a little pricey. Louis's at Pawley's is James Beard Award winning chef Louis Olsteen's establishment. Think of a Low Country version of Jack Fry's and that is Louis's. I think Shawn Ward may have cooked for Olsteen in Charleston if I'm not mistaken. Also very good and pricey.

If you like microbrew then Quigley's Pint & Plate is for you. The beer is fine but the menu of standard pub grub is probably one of the the most fairly priced in the area.

Hog Heaven has some pretty decent BBQ, Not the best I've had, but I really like the sauces and the buffet is very reasonable.

Just up the road in Murrell's Inlet on the business loop there are several other large, touristy restaurants. Some are better than others. We prefer the ones on the north end the best. Bovine's, Drunken Jack's, Divine Fish House and Dead Dog Saloon are all pretty good and a little easier on the wallet. These places are all connected by the Marshwalk. A .5 mile path that connects them to the docks. There is usually some pretty entertaining night life there as well.

For lunch options, You'd be remiss if you didn't hit the Pawley's Island Tavern at least once. Don't let what the place looks like from the outside scare you away. They have some pretty good eats.
Have fun!

Thanks, Dan - very very helpful. I went a few times as a young child with my parents, and then once again several years ago with friends. The golf is very nice, and your comment about being in another place despite being close to Myrtle is spot on.

We'll be staying at a condo at Litchfield Retreat, so most breakfasts and lunches will be at the condo. We'll probably do 3 or 4 dinners out, and 3 or 4 in, so your suggestions will fill our evenings pretty well.

Just looked this up online - it closed in 2008! Apparently Olsteen went out to Vegas...
