leave the gun. take the cannoli.

by Megan Johnson » Wed Mar 07, 2007 2:52 pm

it's cliché, I know.

but I need HALP!

a girlfriend of mine is celebrating a birthday soon, and I'd like to bring some cannolis to the party!

alas, there is NO WAY I could ever make them myself (the only cooking I do involves throwing a bunch of stuff into a skillet and letting it simmer---pastries = NOT my thing), so I need recommendations from folks about where I can order some for take-out.

the only cannolis I'm familiar with are from Ray Parrella's, and they aren't bad, but if'n anyone has any other suggestions, that would be super.

My recollection is that Vincenzo's has good cannolis.

Megan, I haven't been there lately, but I'm thinking that Melillo's might make a splendid model.

Volare has a wonderful cannoli. Also I know that Lotsa Pasta has them as well.

I don't know if they are a regular feature on their menu, but we had some AMAZING cannoli's from Porcini at a special event once. Might be worth a call!

Also, I actually got some really good CHOCOLATE cannoli's once at Whole Foods. But again, don't know if they are a regular feature.

My sister-in-law actually had a cannoli wedding cake! YUM!

Cannoli

by Michele Melillo-Clem » Fri Mar 09, 2007 12:00 am

We have wonderful cannoli's at Melillo's. They won a blue ribbon in the State Fair a couple of years ago and people rave about them. Give me a call at 540-9975 and you can stop in and try one on me. We make them fresh to order. There are many kinds of cannoli fillings, and we use chocolate chips, ricotta, and lemon in ours.

Melillos' does have a good canoli, but they're really easy to make. You can get the canoli shells premade at Lotsa Pasta, and the filling is just ricotta, sugar and vanilla beaten together with pistachios, candied orange and lemon peel and/or chocolate chips.

Plus if you make 'em yourself, there's always leftover filling to lick off of the beaters.

Clay, dahling, I don't think so. I'd surely find a way to screw it up.

Melillo's might just be the place!

can I place a carry-out order for, like, 8 of them?

Spinelli's has very good Canolli's.

I have a good recipe for a canolli pie

15 oz. Ricotta Cheese
2 eggs
1/3 cup Kahlua
1/4 cup sugar
3 tbs Chocolate chips - semi sweet

Mix in a blender but not too long and pour into chocolate graham cracker crust

Bake 300 degree F for one hour

Cool at room temp before putting in ice box

Served chilled with fresh whipped cream.

Enjoy

that pie doesn't sound TOO labor-intensive.

but I'd still rather pay someone else to make it.

thanks for the suggestions, all!

Cannoli

by Michele Melillo-Clem » Thu Mar 15, 2007 4:58 pm

Megan, if you want to order them from Melillo's, please let me know. You can reach Ashley or me at 540-9975. We have the large cannoli shells and we have the mini (3 bite) cannoli shells. We'd be happy to help you.

I know this thread is a little old, but I wanted to note that The Bakery has very good cannoli. The cafe at work (Southern Baptist Seminary) just started buying stuff from The Bakery to sell.

And I will have to try to make that pie!
