Knife Sharpening

by DeeDee D » Tue May 06, 2008 1:58 pm

Does anyone know of any place in Southern IN where I can get my knives sharpened? I know about the place on Shelbyville Rd., but I don't get out that way much through the week and with gas, I'd rather stay close to home. Thanks for any help.

I just noticed, while waiting at the meat counter in my local Kroger, a sign that reads "we will sharpen your knifes" Dont know if they would be any good or not but maybe something to check out.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Kroger uses a small machine to sharpen knives. They do their own on it. Not the best around, but does a pretty good job and won't damage your knives.

I don't know Steve, it depends on who operates that machine. I sent our knives down to the Kroger near us once and they all came back worse than they left. I was very upset.

Another suggestion is calling Gulley Cutlery. Based in Jeffersonville. 283-6993.
I don't know if he will come to an individuals home. He does a lot of food service places.

No way ... I'd have to get a lot broker. Work is the worst four letter word.

Steve, thanks for the tip, I called them and the nice lady I talked to is going to check and see if they would be able to do this for me. She asked what type of knives I had and suggested not going to Kroger. Thanks!

I know it is no where near New Albany, but Heimerdinger's Cutlery on Shelbyville road is THE best. I mistakenly took a good chef's knife to Kroger and some kid ran it through an industrial sharpener. My fault, but almost ruined an $80 Henkels. Heimerdinger's saved that knife.

After years of buying mid grade and upper mid grade knives I have come to find that the best knives are the ones you can send back to the manufacturer and they will sharpen and/or replace them for a nominal fee. This would require you to ship them off but I've found the turn around time is no more than 3 weeks. Since I do this almost twice a year I have 2 basic sets that I rotate so I always have knives (Cutco).

I just purchased a basic set of Shun knives...I'm not sure how long they will go between sharpening. I think I read something on the net that they shouldn't be sharpened more than once a year.

And...WOW are they sharp!

Free knife sharpening at Campbell's Gourmet Cottage. A limit of 2 but who would care. Take your knives over a period of time for professional sharpening. In the case of good cutlery, does mileage matter?
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.
