Grains of Paradise

by Stephen D » Sun Apr 06, 2008 12:45 pm

Anybody have any experience with it?

I'm thinking of mail ordering some from epicentre, but want to see if they are worth the trouble...

I mostly use them to grind over cheeses. Nice flavor. Lotsa Pasta has (or had) them.

That would definately be more convenient. I'll stop by there Tues. Thanks!

I would give Lotsa Pasta first shot, but if they don't have them, try The Spice Merchant in Chenoweth Square (subject of a recent forum discussion) or Nuts N Stuff on Preston just north of the Watterson.

Thanks for the tips, Robin...

The Spice Merchant is a regular stop for me so I'm 99% sure she doesn't have them.

Nuts and stuff is a new source for me. How do you think they stack up versus Lotsa Pasta?

It's really a completely different kind of store, Stephen ... mostly bulk products, a very wide variety of herbs and spices - and, obviously, nuts - it's not on my regular pathways, so I don't get out there as often as I'd like, but I've found unusual and interesting things there. It's not a direct competitor with Lotsa Pasta, though ... no meats, cheeses, canned goods, international foods, etc., just bulk spices and nuts.

Good to know. Lotsa Pasta didn't have them either, so I guess I'll get to see for myself what nuts n stuff has to offer.

I am using them in a pepper melange:

1 pt Grains of Paradise
1 pt Sichuan Peppercorns
1 pt Pink Peppercorns

It's Pretty cool, but the next batch I'm gonna replace the Pinks with Salish Alderwood smoked sea salt....
