Figgy pudding

by Hank Sutton » Thu Dec 20, 2007 12:56 am

There was a fascinating story (audio and text) about figgy pudding yesterday on All Things Considered from National Public Radio.

Has anyone ever eaten figgy pudding (or any variation) or tried to make it?

A wonderful Brit friend made it for years when I lived in NY. It was like a moist boozy fruitcake- without the citron, I was never around when she made it, but her apt. smelled more and more like a distillery as the holiday neared and her puddings (she made 5 or 6) were "watered"
every few days. I think she made it in late Oct or early Nov.
The one she served on Christmas day always had an old English coin baked in it. I think it meant a good year for whoever got it in their serving. Of course I often asked if it didn't also mean that dentistry was in the offing. (I just reread the article-I see it is mentioned)
