What Cookbook is on your Holiday wish list?

by Lora S » Mon Oct 28, 2013 1:48 pm

Just curious if anyone has a specific cookbook they hope is given to them over the Holidays?

I would love to have the six volume, 2,400 page set of "Modernist Cuisine", but at $450.00, I don't think Ole St. Nick will be leaving it under my tree any time soon.
An oldie but a goodie is "La Technique" that Jacques Pepin set the standard with back in 1976.
Between this book and the 1997 version of "Joy of Cooking" which seems a little more advanced than other versions, they are the cookbooks I've referenced the most over the years. 8)

Dan-

Thank you for the reply- I was hoping their would be more input from the others. My Brother is always hard to shop for and was hoping on some insights from more local experts. Lora

I'm sorry I didn't jump in, Lora. I guess I've just moved over to the Internet for cooking ideas and generally Google for concepts rather than using cookbooks any more. I keep my old favorites around for old times' sake and flip through them on occasion - the recently departed Marcella Hazan, Craig Claiborne and Pierre Franey, James and Julia and Julie Sahni and Madhur Jaffrey and Paul Prudhomme and lots more, but my cookbook collecting really spanned the 70s and 80s.

A lot of the really popular cookbooks nowadays are coming from name chefs, Ottolenghi and Keller and such, but I always wonder how much of those cookbooks is shaped by ego.

Here's a possible lead for gifting: PBS puts out a blog post every month featuring their food section's favorite cookbooks of the month. Here's a link to October:

The ones by Lidia, Alice Waters and Gramercy Tavern would be potentially interesting to me. If I still bought cookbooks. 8)

I generally stay away from hoity-toity cookbooks, loosely defined to mean they contain recipes for stuff I can't pronounce...and probably wouldn't eat even if I could.

The cookbook I've been enjoying recently is "Remember Me" a compilation by local writer Alice Colombo. Helps me to understand where some of you folks are coming from  ...The other is titled "Tupelo Honey Cafe" (Sims/Sonoskus). This book is the essence of New Southern Cooking that so many chefs are aspiring to these days.
