I use butter. Never magerine. Never mind the arguments either way. Anyway... I've usuallybuywhats on sale and get Land o' Lakes when I can. Meijers had Plugra on sale a week or 2 ago so I bought some. OMG! What have I been missing?! I couldn't believe the difference. So, all you great cooks out there, what other brands of butter have you used that are awesome and where can they be found?

Carla-
You happened upon my favorite butter! I love Plugra- you are right that the taste in totally different.
My other favorite ( for bread) is Vermont Butter and Cheese Creamery sea salt butter- amazing cultured European style butter with crystals of sea salt. Yum! We used to carry it at our store and then I couldn't find it anymore .... :cry: They may have it at Lotsa; I recently bought some at Earth Fare.

We used to carry the Vermont butters but they didn't really sell for us. That stuff is awesome. They sell it in the Murray's counters at Kroger now.

There is a brand of butter from Parma Italy made from the same cows that they milk for making Parmeggiano Reggiano that is really, really good. We actually have the butter by the same brand at the Wine Market (which I don't recall...Sorry!) that is made from Buffalo milk, which is also quite good. Their "regular" butter is available at Valu Market.

I really ought to know the difference, but I think aside from the obvious one (mass-produced versus, smaller, more artisanal production) the difference is sweet cream versus cultured butter.

When we go to WV we always stop at an Amish store in Ohio. The homemade butter we get there is fantastic. :)

Better butter in moderation than the fake stuff, that's for sure! I like the French Beurre d'Isigny that comes in foil-wrapped "logs." Lotsa Pasta usually has it, and they do carry some Vermont Butter & Cheese products, too.

Sorry sorry. I goofed. Plugra is made by Keller Dairies, not Kerry. My bad.
