Rice and Pasta

So, we're trying to eat less white rice and standard pasta. I don't like standard brown rice so much, and most whole wheat pasta is awful.

My brother-in-law brought back from thailand some great dark rices, black and red. Any good places for such in Louisville?

Do you have a favorite higher fiber pasta?

Thanks so much.

I don't know for sure, Charles, but I would start with Lotsa Pasta or Rainbow Blossom on the rices and fall back on Whole Foods (or possibly World Market, which I don't know very well) if the locals don't come through.

I'm not sure about high-fiber pasta, but a friend who works at Creation Gardens gave us a pack of corn-quinoa pasta (!) that was surprisingly awesome, i.e., you couldn't really tell it from the real thing. It was supposed to be highly nutritious, but I can't speak to the fiber issue.

I'm a HUGE fan of red rice! They have it at Creation Gardens. I've also bought it on Amazon.

Black rice is good too but the red is my absolute favorite.

Thanks. So, Creation Gardens is open to the public?

Choi's Market in Lyndon (next door to the Thornton station at New LaGrange Rd & Lyndon Ln) carries fantastic red rice. Elephant God brand Red Cargo Rice.

Charles,

My first thought was Creation Gardens also- sorry no option there.
You can call Lotsa Pasta to see if they have red or black rice ( I recently noticed they've expanded their rice selections.) You may also want to try EarthFare at the Summit- they have some interesting gourmet options and heavy on gluten-free so they may have some.

Regarding the higher fiber pasta- I've yet to have one I really like, so I'd love to hear if they are out there....

Try Bionaturae Organic whole wheat pastas. After reading this (http://www.americastestkitchenfeed.com/ ... eat-pasta/), we gave it a try and it's surprisingly good.

I know it's sold at Whole Foods.

Thanks, Brad! My MIL is newly on a high fiber diet due to a stroke, and I will going to stock up on this for both of us . ( a sad/ funny note: my BIL assured her that "pasta was a high fiber food " after he researched the issue on the Mayo Clinic site. He neglected to read " the fine print" that they said whole grain pasta). :(

At Earth Fare (at the Summit) today-
They have the Ancient Harvest Quinoa pasta, Ruby Red rice and purple Thai Sticky rice, along with black Japonica rice and a whole grain red. :D

I bought the Ancient Harvest pasta- I'll let you know what I think when I've tried it.

Tonight for dinner, we had the Ancient Harvest spaghetti with a light marinara as a side. I highly recommend it ( though it's expensive at $3.69 for 8oz). A corn flour and quinoa flour blend, the favor was very good with an extra depth over semolina pasta,; cooked al dente, it was perfectly separate and no gumminess like I've found in whole wheat pastas. 4g of fiber per serving.

We all REALLY liked this product- I understand why Joel's friends raved!

thanks for keeping us updated. Looking forward to giving it a try.

I have had a pure corn pasta product which wasn't great. We didn't hate it but it we didn't love it either.
