Dragon fruit, aka pitaya?

by Sara R » Mon May 14, 2012 8:09 am

I tried searching the forums to see if this had been addressed already but I wasn't able to find anything...

Are there any local grocers that carry dragon fruit (aka pitaya)? I would imagine that Jungle Jim's would have it, but obviously that's a bit of a drive from Louisville. I believe Trader Joes has a packaged dried version, but I was hoping to find fresh.

Sara, my first shot would be the big Valu market in Iroquois Manor, just down from Vietnam Kitchen. It has an amazing collection of ethnic produce from all over the world. After that, possibly the big Asian grocery on Preston near Fern Valley Road.

Shoot, I wish I had seen this yesterday- I could have checked for you. Since it was raining ALL day Mother's Day, I ended up taking an impromptu to trip to the Iroquis Valu Market with my kids. We had great fun looking at all the "weird" ingredients, being silly, and each of them got to pick one thing they'd never tried before to buy. :D  ( Mom got $50 worth of ingredients I'm not sure what I'm going to do with- half the fun is figuring it out  )

I agree with Robin that this is your most likely source. I didn't see it there, but I wasn't looking. I'd give them a call and ask.

Enjoy!

I have seen it on occasion at Whole Paycheck...Um, I mean Whole Foods also. I would call first though.

Creation gardens has it- do you have a restaurant friend who can order it for you? It's on the menu at Mayan Cafe, perhaps you could buy one from Bruce.

I called the big Valu Market as per Robin's suggestion, but they said they do not carry it. I had looked at Whole Paycheck over the weekend and they didn't have it either.

I guess Creation Gardens sells it by the case, but that might be a bit overkill considering it's just me and my husband.

Looks like a road trip might be in order...

I often see it at my Kroger (of all places) on Hubbard Lane.

Just curious, but what are you using it for? Or just want to try it?

Call Jungle Jim's before you make the drive. Don't recall seeing any a few weeks ago, but not sure when it's in season so I may have just been at the wrong time.

My husband and I were in the Tampa/Clearwater Beach area over the weekend for a little getaway and he treated me to an incredible Mother's Day brunch at a place called Oystercatchers. Anyway, they had dragon fruit on their buffet and we really enjoyed it. We had never had it before and after enjoying it so much, we were hoping to find it locally.

Nice! I used to live down in Clearwater. So many fond memories of the area. Did you get to check out Fort De Soto beach? One of my favorite places to waste a day!

Sara, I've found dragon fruit at the Vietnam Food Market, 5017 S. 3rd Street. Very good prices, and lots of other goodies.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'd pretty much given up. I was back in Houston a few weeks ago and my husband and I went on a several hour long wild goose chase and never found it (though we did have a fun time exploring Chinatown!) We figured if I we couldn't find it there, it was hopeless for Louisville. But again, thanks and I'll definitely have to check it out!

I saw it at the Middletown kroger today. It was on the stand with all the mango/pineapple/papaya.
