Just put my first turkey in the oven!

by Adam Smith » Tue Jan 03, 2012 2:05 pm

And I'm half excited, half nervous. It took forever to thaw in the fridge, like 5 days, but everything else went pretty smooth so far. I brined it first and now it's in the oven. Wish me luck :D

You popped that bird in the oven Tuesday at 2:05 PM. Any reports on the outcome?

Thanks for the interest guys, I had given up on the thread! :D

The turkey came out wonderful, very juicy and flavorful. I basically followed Alton Brown's recipe, which I do a lot by the way! The only snag I hit was because of my inexperience with cooking turkeys or any whole bird, I had trouble finding the deepest part of the meat when I was checking internal temperature; I probably could've pulled it 15-20 minutes before I did and it would've been even better. All in all it was fun and I've been in a tryptophan haze for the past two days 8)

One more thing, my grandmother's turkeys never tasted this good but shhhhh don't tell her!

Alton's brining recipe is da bomb. Glad it worked out for you.
Any leftovers to make Hot Browns?

Plenty of leftovers but none for hot browns, at least none for me. It's probably not very Louisvillian of me but I've never had a hot brown that I liked. :|

Ahhh- that's why you have to make them yourself! ( I'm personally not much of a fan either- mea culpa).

Atlon's brining recipe with spices ( there are two recipes floating out there in cyberland) has become our go-to turkey recipe for the last 3 years. Love it!

Congrats on your success- here's to many more!

Thanks, Deb! AB has never steered me wrong. I've learned so much from Good Eats; I think before I started watching that show I really had no idea how to properly cook anything.
