Went to Jungle Jim's

by BevP » Wed Nov 02, 2011 6:05 pm

The family (me ,hubby and our 26 yr old son) took a daytrip yesterday primarily to go to Jungle Jims but got side tracked when I spotted Ikea first Have to admit I fell in love with Ikea. We even had the Swedish meatball plate for lunch. Bye the time I got to Jungle Jims I was a bit overwhelmed. We picked up a few things here and there but really curious what other folks like to shop for when they go there.I probably didnt hit 1/2 the store before giving up.
Hopefully we will go back there before the holidays so any insight would help.
Thanks

The cheese section is awesome! I also like the ethnic sections. It's one of the only places on the East Coast that sells Twinings Everyday Tea and 1607, both are staples in our house. I usually pick up some olive oil and a funky pasta. I've also had a lot of fun in the Mexican aisles. I don't know that I've actually seen the whole place yet, I always run out of time or am just worn out before I get through it all!

Super cool store. I've only been once (back in April) and would love to go back. They have over 1,200 beers many which are not distributed here in Kentuckiana. Wife and daughter found lots of goodies but I don't think they're interested in a return trip. Might have to sweeten the return trip with something else. Maybe dorm furniture from Ikea? :(

Thanks everybody! I knew we would revisit the beer /wine area practically had to drag son and hubby away from that area, just got a glance at the cheeses and deli . Hubby was also intrigued with the variety of sauces . I think it is worth a second trip just with better planning.

Just like Bass pro for food or maybe foodisney. Spent the day there ( 6 hours) as a treat two weeks ago. Thank god I forgot my credit card or I would have spent a G without any thinking. Loved the live fish tanks and the whole chickens. Wish i could drink more , loved the wine/beer rows, though the liquor aisles left alot to be desired. The fresh baked cheese bread delighted and the nut rolls reminded me of my grand mother's Slovak recepie. pasta out the wazoo and ethnic stylings not seen in Louisville. I bought some golf ball sized eggplant that dazzled broiled with olive oil. whole sugar cane stalks, and baby plantains. Got to go again soon

It helps to bring a cooler when you go so you you don't have to worry about perishables.
I like the fact that everything is under one roof where as if I were looking for simular things locally, I may have to go to three or four different places.

Some things that they have that I can't get (or haven't found) here:
Servati Pretzel Sticks and Queen City Sausages
Packo's Hot Dogs
Kim Chee Base for making homemade
Miracle Berrys
An awesome selection of beer, soda and cheeses
Better prices on premium cigars like Rocky Patel

Plus a stop at the Peruvian restaruant down the road is a must as well!

Stopped in today and dropped a cool $300 bucks :? ...Here's what I tell people about J.J. (or as we call it in our family "Monkey Madness"):

Do NOT go on a weekend. We went today (Monday) and it was a nice relaxing 3 hour exploratory mission. Go on a weekend and...well...good fricking luck. If the little Asian ladies in the silly-vegetable aisle don't get you, the stroller moms will.

Do NOT go with anyone who is not a "Foodie". If go with anyone else the end result is going to be (A) they are bored and (B) you are pissed off because they wanted to leave before you were good and ready. Hell, we can spend an hour in the cheese section alone, this is WAY beyond the attention span of non-food-people.

PLAN on spending 50% more than you EVER thought you would. Not that things are more expensive than elsewhere, you're just going to see things you CAN'T pass up...for me it's the hot sauce aisle, others can't get past the cheese, etc, etc.

Steve P, next time you go, if you haven't found it already, grab a jar of the Hickory Garlic powder by Captain Thom's. You'll love it! It's kinda near the hot sauce area, where the bbq rubs are. They also make a few rubs, bought two last time I was in there, but haven't had a chance to try yet.

Any hot sauce recommendations? My dad is a hot sauce fan but he likes ones that have lots of flavor with a nice heat, not just scorch your mouth. His latest thing is the Louisiana Gold which was why we stopped at Jungle Jim's on our trip.

Madeline,

Hooooo-boy, I dunno. I've prolly got 50+ hot sauces in the door of my beer fridge right now and they all hold a place in my heart...well most of them anyway. A few I just keep around to amaze my friends and hurt my enemies. 8) If I had to go out on a limb and pick two sauces to take with me to a desert island it would be Iguana Green (Jalapeno) and Iguana Gold (Habanero).

I'm with ya on the rubs and sauces...My two favorite store bought rubs (and I've honestly gotta say they are becoming my all around "go to" rubs) are Big Bob Gibsons and Blues Hog, both carried by Jungle Jims. Just bought another rub there yesterday called "Flying Pig Swine Spice", I'll let you know what I think of it.

I think we were in there 3 hours last week and I am sure we didn't see half the place. My husband and son like to cook as much or more than I do so they were as entertained as I was.
I guess my kids thought every kid went to different grocery stores in different cities on vacations just to check them out like I did with them . But if we were in a town with a store we didn't have I had to go see, even if it was just to get snacks for the hotel....that was always my excuse anyway :)

Also didn't see those, but when I was up there for the Weekend of Fire last month, they did have balut eggs in the cooler section at the end of the "non-standard produce" aisle with the kimchi. They also have a pretty good selection of the Hotlix insect candies/flavored bugs which make great gifts for the younger kids in the family...

That place is hard on my wallet - I'm already a "ooh - shiny! Must try it" kind of random shopper in a regular grocery store, so JJ's just kills me.
