Seafood retail

by Ken B » Wed Jun 29, 2011 9:13 pm

So I got home from Whole Foods and looked over my receipt since it seemed higher than the usual pretty darn high. The very large Sea Bass steak I picked up set me back $40! I usually go to Whole Foods because in spite of the high prices, the quality and freshness are great, and the sourcing is very clearly labeled, with an eye towards showcasing sustainably raised or harvested fish, which is important to me and my family.

My question is, are there any other decent retail sources for seafood, preferably with decent proximity to the Highlands? My Kroger and the Mid City Valu Market are okay, with some occasional deals or really nice fish, but that's more occasional than regular. And it seems like both of those places source fish of dubious origin from China, SE Asia and South America. Been out to Highlands Fish Market and was unimpressed. Have not checked out the Fresh Market (I know you are on here somewhere Fresh Market Seafood guy. . . ) but in general I am not super motivated to drive out to either of their locations. I'm amenable to frozen since pretty much everything in our land-locked location that masquerades as fresh is previously frozen anyway.

Ken, I like Seafood Connection in St. Matthews, which isn't quite as long a haul out. It's in the Chenoweth Square shopping center with Paul's produce market, Majid's, St. Matthews Wine Co. and the Cheddar Box. Highland Seafood, despite the name, is in Middletown, and is very good indeed.

Frankly, Highland and Seafood Connection are the only places other than Whole Foods where I buy fish locally.

Whole Paycheck pretty much marks up their fresh fish 80-100% from the wholesale price. Sea Bass is right around 18-20 bucks a # wholesale. With the dwindling population of Patagonian Tooth-fish (AKA Sea Bass), it's not ever going to get any cheaper :(

Actually, there is a sustainable Patagonian Toothfish/Chilean Sea Bass fishery, product from it is certified, and Whole Foods buys only certified product. It's complicated, and there's apparently a lot of counterfeiting, but if you can be assured of buying certified, you're not contributing to extinction.

I don't trust ANY statement about the sourcing of seafood from any retailer (or restaurant)...local or otherwise...period.

Thanks all.

Yeah, I wouldn't have bought this sea bass if it weren't MSC certified. I was kind of surprised to see that actually. It was only $24.99/lb so maybe I did get a deal?

The one time I shopped Seafood Connection (which had been recommended by a friend) it really seemed to me like a place to get prepared food, I seem to recall maybe only one thing in their freezer and the guys behind the counter pretty much looked at me blankly when I asked if they sold anything from their cold case uncooked. I'll give them another shot.

I do miss Stan's too. They never had a lot, but I did really trust them as far as where their stuff came from, and it was always pretty decent, if a bit slim on the selection side.

Albeit a chain restaurant (gasp!), Mitchell's Fish Market has a retail counter as well. I have never bought from them, simply because of proximity to my house. But if the fish they server is any testament, it is good quality and tasty.

Good call. Mitchell's, it should be added, is a smallish, regional chain, and they do things right.

Oh, I'll have to look into that. We ate there once when we took my kids to the Newport Aquarium, and were very pleasantly surprised by how good it was.
