ice cream makers

by Jessie H » Tue Jun 21, 2011 6:27 pm

i was watching america's test kitchen the other day and the equipment corner segment featured ice cream makers. they tested several models and recommended one that was affordable. however, they said that most models, including the one they recommended, come with an insert that should be frozen at a temperature most home freezers can't reach. does this mean that it would be pointless for me to buy an ice cream maker and try making ice cream at home?

I bought one of the cheap ($30) deals at Target and it works fine. It has an insert that I have to keep in the freezer and I've had no problems with it. It gets little use now that Comfy Cow has opened up.

We use one that fits on our Cuisinart that is basically a bowl you freeze. It works just fine for us. :D

I had a $3500 Italian gelato machine at the Oakroom...
Started having problems right after it came out of warranty.
Never could manage to get it fixed properly, so i brought in our machine from home.

I used one of these with 3 bowls in rotation through the freezer.
Never was as nice as the expensive machine was (when working properly), but it more than got the job done.
I literally had to run 3 batches a day to keep up with sorbet for intermezzo courses, in addition to any ice creams I was using on desserts, and another we used on a salad.

Cuisinart® Ice Cream/Yogurt Maker - White

Point being:
It gets the job done, and It's affordable.

I put vegetables in your desserts, white chocolate with your fish and other nonsense stuff that you think shouldn't make sense, but coax the nonsense into something that makes complete sense in your mouth. Just open your mind, mouth and eat.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Cuisinart ice cream makers. Plus, Williams Sonoma has a deal going on right now where you get a second bowl, think it's like $69 for whole set up.

I've given the Cuisinart to three people as gifts. All have raved about it.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.
