No more Good Eats

Alton Brown calls an end to 'Good Eats'

I'll have to admit that it's been a while since I watched, but I really like the science-y approach that this guy has to cooking. That and his mac and cheese recipe is the best.

This show is the reason I only cook when I want to...my husband has become a much better cook and loves to cook now, and my son now cooks daily and wants to go to culinary school. :)

Noooooo!!!

I've kind of seen this coming, though. Fewer and fewer new episodes, and airings on Food TV shrinking back to once a week.

He has probably the best approach to teaching cooking I've ever seen. One item cooked in one half-hour show instead of an entire meal. Showing the science behind the steps and if you do "x", it'll go wrong this way or if you want it more this way, try this.

Boo. Good Eats is the only, and I mean the only, show I watch on the FoodNetwork/Reality/Competition channel anymore. The new "shows" are a joke, and IMHO, old favorites like Ina Garten's show have gone downhill. Giada is a joke now (compare Everyday Italian from 3 or so years ago to that today - she didn't used to overenunciate everything). FoodNetwork has made her into a caricature just like Rachel Ray.

I hated seeing Michael Chiarello's show disappear a few years ago, and with the demise of Good Eats, my FoodNetwork viewing days are numbered.

Alton said he wanted to leave on his own terms, when HE wanted.

A couple of Food Network "specials" are expecting to come along in the next year or so.

I went to one of his book signings. That was a cool show. Will be missed.

He has a great cookbook that I love to use. As far as I'm concerned The Food Network is now a total and complete YAWN. Bring back The Two Fat Ladies!

And, alas, only one Fat Lady remains.

I always liked this show. You can still catch reruns of some episodes on YouTube. I've found a couple there while recipe hunting.

As I recall, Bourdain does a pretty good job in his most recent book of explaining the downfall of The Food Network. You gotta read between the lines a little bit but basically it's ran by a bunch of jackwagons who think the 18-34 demographic is the ONLY demographic. The Cooking Channel (outside of a few rerun-shows) is absolutely PITIFUL.

I fall in that demographic... and hate what The Food Network has become... Good Eats is the only show remaining that I watch, and Alton has clearly run out of topics.

His show (and Rachel Ray to a certain extent) are what got me into cooking. Ray because she made easy things that I could replicate and improve... Alton because he explained the food science behind everything and allowed me to develop actual cooking methods.
