where can I buy plantains by the case (preferbably ripe)?

by Ginger Harris » Mon Apr 25, 2011 9:49 am

Anyone know where I can buy a case or two of plantains reasonably priced (less than the price at Meijers of 79 cents a pound?

Thanks, Ginger

I don't know for sure, Ginger, but I might start by calling the South End Valu Market in the Iroquois Manor shopping center on South Third Street, which usually has good pricing and serves a large multi-ethnic market with plenty of fresh produce.

Maybe also call La Preferida market in the Eastland shopping center at Bardstown Road at Watterson Trail.

The advantage of going to these places is that while you're there, you can eat at Vietnam Kitchen if you're at Iroquois Manor, or at DakShin Indian at Eastland!

You might try La Tropicana,
5215 Preston Highway,
(502) 964-5957

They always have a good selection of both green and ripe, though I'm not sure what they charge.

Ginger

The Louisville Produce Terminal on Jennings Lane is open to the public and the vendors sell in case lots. Try either Horton's or Paul's fruit market(the far end of the terminal) for your plantains.

Thanks for all the replies- and next time I will try the produce terminal. We ended buying a few here and there, where we could find ripe ones.
