Beer-Butt chicken - mmmm!

by NDDuncan » Wed Feb 23, 2011 1:26 pm

Last Saturday, the weather was so gorgeous, I decided to fire up the smoker. Had some beer-butt chicken and made a big bowl of tabouli salad to go with it. We were in heaven!!!

Anybody have any variations on this delectible dish?

Well, there is Trash Can Turkey. A couple of years ago, a friend made this for his backyard gathering. Probably the very best turkey (tender and moist) I've ever had. He said it was imperative to use a trash can that had never been used for garbage and although not mentioned in this link he stressed the can should be fired up once, sans food, to burn off the galvanizing on the can.. :P

I like to use Dr. Pepper with BBQ seasonings and then a slather of BBQ sauce at the end.
Ginger Ale with a Teriyaki Glaze is purdy durn tasty as well :D

I usually do mine in 'individual serving size' on the grill with game hens and Red Bull cans. That way everyone can pick the seasoning they want for the outside - keeps em all happy.

I actually bought a grill plate from LTD a few years ago to use in your oven or on the grill. It's nice, has 2 round inserts to hold the cans. I usually use a rotisserie type rub, but sometimes I use a southwestern - then we eat the chicken in totillas w/ pico de gallo - very tasty!

I always spray the bird with olive oil cooking spray AFTER appliying the rub - it really makes a difference sealing in those spices 8)

Just an FYI -- The coating on the outside of most beverage cans is made up of several nasty chemicals that have been polymerized into a stable form. Burning the can or exposing to high heat will cause this polymer to break down. I would not want to eat anything that has been exposed to these chemicals. I believe that you can buy stainless cans that are the same size and pour the beverage in order to achieve the same effect. I cannot go into much more detail publicly, but would be willing to confirm my credentials with Robin in private if anyone requires verification.

You all are making me so hungry! I like to keep it real simple with a mesquite rub and a can of Budweiser. I typically have to make mine the way I like it and leave Chef Moore a chicken all to himself, because he can literally eat the whole thing.

I will keep some of the pointers in mind tho. Loved the individual hens with the slim cans. I think coors lite is coming out with a slim can of beer that might be versatile. Dr. Pepper, Gingerale, olive oil, paint chemicals...great thread!

So did anyone bother to ask the chicken what THEY thought of having a can of beer shoved up their ass ?

I didn't think so.

Some farmer probably went to the trouble of growing that chicken organically...and then went to the trouble of killing it humanely...and along you come, shove a can...a can of beer no less...up his ass, and the whole illusion goes right out the window.

I tell ya....
