Fresh Turkey question .... quick help needed....

by Becky M » Sat Dec 25, 2010 2:57 pm

We decided to buy a fresh turkey for Christmas, it is a Butterball brand. When my husband opened it up to rinse it off it smelled ...... different. Not bad per se, but offish in a way. We do not deal with fresh meat a lot, so just wondering if this is normal. My mom and husband say it is fine, once it was rinsed it smelled better. But i still feel it smells..... funny.

Does fresh turkey normally smell different from thawed frozen turkey?

Becky, if the date is good, it's fine. Cryovacced stuff always smells a little weird upon opening.

Butterball Turkey launched a 24-hour hotline this year with experts on hand to answer any last-minute turkey questions or calm a cook down after a disaster.

The phone is 1-800-BUTTERBALL (1-800-288-8372). Experts can handle questions in English and Spanish. It will take calls until Dec. 25.

I know this is way after the fact, but the hotline has been operating for at least 30 years now! (When I ran Butterball, I moved it from a 1-2 day hotline to a full week, and it's expanded ever since)
