Mom coming in for convention...help!

by Madeline M » Thu Apr 08, 2010 1:36 pm

My mom and her friend are coming in for the Women Of Joy Convention next weekend. It is going to at the Expo Center Freedom Hall. Are there any good places to eat in that area? It looks like there is every chain imaginable from google maps, which would be okay with them, but would like to direct them towards something local if possible...just nothing too pricey, Outback seems to be their price cut off.

Also, how bad will the Thunder Over Louisville traffic be around the airport/Freedom Hall? Are there other things going on that weekend they could do? They have a 8 hour break Saturday afternoon. I was going to send them to shop Bardstown or Springhurst but think the traffic may make it nearly impossible to do either. I won't be with them, so thinking something fairly simple to get to would be better, just not familiar with that area.

Saturday afternoon traffic on Bardstown Road shouldn't be bad - I think parking and walking is a great idea if the weather is good.

Restaurants near the airport/convention center are rare. I'd send them to Bardstown Road for food, as well, or perhaps the Frankfort Ave. corridor. The great thing about "thunder" traffic is that it rarely seems to really tie up most of the city except downtown and perhaps the interstates (until it's over, of course, when the entire city seems to gridlock).

I would tell them to drive to the Crittenden Drive side of the fairgrounds and to exit there. Make a right on Crittenden, make a right on Eastern Pkwy and take that all the way to Bardstown Rd. I don't think traffic in that area will be affected at all.

I think that at the rate people trickle into downtown all day, traffic won't really be a problem during the day/early evening. It's AFTER the fireworks that it gets hairy - tens of thousands of people trying to leave the same place at the exact same time.

Vietnam Kitchen is pretty close and cheap.

If they're BBQ fans, send them down Preston Hwy to "Bootleg BBQ" (just north of Preston and Outer Loop).

Glad to hear they will be able to get around, will print up some maps and send them on their way! Think they will enjoy either of those places and it won't be the standard fare. Thanks for the suggestions!
